I’m hoping area G will break into the 20’s.

If Harlingen was there maybe!

Between JBA and Hanna, I think Hanna will finish higher. They play better, and they got the experience

Why do Area G bands always finish low?  Biased?

shhhh let it die. At the same time, I think hanna will place higher than JBA. JBA prob top 30's and hanna mid 30's.

This don't make sense.

Ima gonna go to state to watch!  Anyone else gonna be there?

i have always thought that there was a negative bias towards bands from South Texas/East Texas. I still think it exists, but it isn't as big as I made it out to be in my head. I think that Roma getting their much deserved spot in 5A State finals somewhat cements that. I will say that there is definitely not as much love or help that bands could receive in South Texas compared to other prominent areas, which makes Roma's accomplishments (as well as the accomplishments of many great bands in South Texas) much stronger in my opinion. I will say that it is more than possible for the students of JBA and Hanna to over exceed what people think they can. These two groups are some of the best that South Texas has to offer, so we, as a community, should back them strongly and give them the support they more than deserve. They don't deserve to be supported any less than the band that you thought should have made it.

Harlingen isn’t going to state because they did not make finals. They did not qualify so your statement has no merit whatsoever.

In 2002 I was marching in JBA and I saw Harlingen marching one of my favorite shows of all time spiral symmetry. I still remember it because as they got off the field in prelims at area I personally told them congrats and good luck at state because I knew they won as soon as they performed. We stayed and watched finals and cheered for Harlingen (big shout out to Donna because it was raining that year the field was muddy and they had white uniforms. Their first set was them on the ground) and all the other bands that made finals because we were just not good enough and we accepted it. At the end of the day it is a competition. At state that year we cheered and I was proud of how well Harlingen did that year because they represented our area so well they broke into the teens if I’m not mistaken. It is such a shame that you can’t show support for 2 great programs that are representing our area. Accept it and grow up!

I think Roma is a fantastic program! It’s so awesome to see them in finals in 5A! I do think that they are underestimated a lot at state. But I’m so glad that they just deliver and really made a statement in these last 2 cycles. It gives 6A hope that they have a chance to get there as well one day. I hope that both our Area G contenders do great it would be good to see them break into the 20’s. That would be a start to build and keep pushing next year.

Do you have a prediction where JBA and Hanna will finish?

What do you think keeps them out of top 20?  Bias?

And all of the Area A bands finishing 38th, 37th, and 36th... that is genuinely so crazy to me

Area A & G both at the bottom.  Those areas also get left out with the TMEA apportionments for All State chairs.

At the end of the day it is a competition and the judges saw something in other bands that was better than both Hanna and JBA.
I think JBA had a better run on Friday at BOA in my opinion. I did not see Hanna so I can’t really speak on them. I did see all the finalist for both competitions BOA and State.  I feel Area G is headed in the right direction In terms of production of shows they’re changing that dynamic and not sticking to old formats as before. I see United with a new director tried something new and it worked for them and it’s great. So we are evolving and adapting to the changes like other areas. But in order to be top dawgs it takes a world of work. It is quite the difference in order to be at that level it takes every individual putting in extra work themselves in order to improve. That means lessons and extra individual practice time in order to help improve the ensemble as a whole. It’s those individual efforts that build up the team. Because everyone has the same 8 hour practice rule. So the playing field is even.

Those bands in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston are some real tough bands to beat and it’s not a fluke that any of them are in finals it’s consistency.

Hanna’s show was really fun. The little low brass trombone thing at the beginning of Hanna’s show sounds STRONG, good for them. They seem to be backfield too! That bass trombone sounds amazing in the mix. Low brass, you all stepped up BIG TIME. Props to their section and director for that. I only saw like 3-4 mellophones on the field and they sounded like a full section, great work! That octopus attacking the ship was an amazing touch.

Alexander’s mellophones stepped it up this year big time, they sound really nice and the sound is there. The trombone soloist was a fun touch, and I really loved the flute solos. The end was so heartwarming and I was HOOKED! Here’s to seeing what production will be put out next year, Alexander always puts out strong show design. Next year should be as good if not better for Area G bands!

I noticed that too it’s absolutely insane. No chance there isn’t a bias opinion.

You realize there's judges that aren't even from Texas on the panel. Zero reason for preconceived notions.
