  1. I don't usually mind as long as the balance works with the band, and I think it's a part of the activity for the foreseeable future, which I'm fine with. I guess the show designers/teachers know the risks of electronic-heavy programs, and take the bad with the good. It just sucks that the bad happened on the last run of the year.
  2. Reagan was 1st in C/D last night, and dropped to 4th tonight. I know judges swap captions, but I'd hate to think that their electronic issues might have effected the design rankings.
  3. It feels futile to attempt to pick a winner out of those programs. I have no idea how things will shake out, but these are kind of where I feel things COULD end up. 1-4: Hebron, Vista, Vandy, Woodlands. Any of these four could earn gold. 5-7: Reagan, Cedar Ridge, Flomo. 8-10: CTJ, Coppell, Marcus. 11-14: Pearland, Round Rock, Keller, Waxahachie. I can't wait to be completely wrong.
  4. I think they have had my favorite show all year, so I would absolutely love to see them take a medal or even gold. It's really hard to say at this point.
  5. This block has been the best consistent stretch of marching band performances I've ever seen from high school students.
  6. I wouldn't say anything comes easily in State finals. But it's going to take a lot to top that run for me.
  7. Electronics issue. Had to skip almost their entire pre-show as a result, I think.
  8. I always have thought that Marcus could comfortably play louder, but it's hard to be mad at them when they sound like that.
  9. It's so difficult to see it from this perspective when you're a student in one of the programs. The goals that teachers set for their students are so much more than a ranking at some BOA competition. But when you're a teenager, all you want to care about is if you beat Hebron or whoever.
  10. I noticed it too. My first thought was a computer issue.
  11. My ears may be playing tricks on me, but it sounds like there's one Coppell lead trumpet just going for broke on these last couple of sustains, and I am absolutely here for it.
  12. Round Rock's show is such a cool design. I could see a certain DCI group running with a concept like this, albeit with more notes...Maybe a corps that has done sci-fi shows in the past...
  13. Pearland came to play! I can't tell if what we're hearing through the stream is the same as what the judges are hearing because the audio has been so weird, but the brass sounded really great. What a great run to open finals.
  14. The stream was definitely between 3-5 minutes behind yesterday. It made me nervous for the bands when it looked like they were taking the field 5 minutes into their performance slot.
  15. Looking past prelims results to the finals schedule. Vista Ridge has had some very good fortune when it comes to finals draws between tonight and BOA. I don’t really think Hebron is going to take a tie for first yesterday lying down, but I also get the sense that Vandegrift can taste that gold medal, and will leave it all on the field today. There’s only two bands in the bottom half I could see moving into the top : Marcus and CTJ. It’s going to be difficult for that to happen, if there’s any motion I think it’s from one of those bands, but not both. The top 5 is going to be interesting. I think the groups that’ll be there will stay roughly the same as yesterday, but I could see the rankings fluctuating quite a bit. All in all, the stage is set for a really stellar lineup this afternoon. I can confidently say I have no idea what is going to happen, but I can’t wait to watch it all unfold.
  16. Right. I can understand how their content rank may have been hurt when compared to the other bands above them (although I still think 36 is too low), but both of those rankings seem harsher than warranted. It's not the most difficult or complex show, but it was executed at a really high level.
  17. Well, yet another UIL sheet with which I have numerous disagreements. What a surprise. Not surprised that Vandy and Hebron tied, and could totally see Vandegrift win tomorrow night. The fight for the top 3 spots is going to be awesome tomorrow. I think everyone in the top 6 can absolutely grab a medal, but I also can see Flomo jumping in there as well. Really glad to see Vista Ridge getting some music love. Thought they were higher than 5th in ensemble but the brass and woodwind ranks make sense to me. The jump from 6th to 7th is bigger than I was expecting. I can see the top half fluctuating a bit tomorrow, but I think the gaps in the bottom half are pretty stable. C/D has it's flaws as a caption, and that was certainly showcased today, but I felt like visual ensemble was especially odd. L.D. Bell ranking 18th there seems low, and I'm not sure about Timber Creek at 35th in that category as well. No adjudication system is perfect, but UIL reminds me time after time why I prefer the BOA/DCI points system.
  18. I'll say: Hebron Woodlands Reagan Vandy Vista Ridge Flomo CTJ Round Rock Coppell Cedar Ridge Marcus Keller Waxahachie Timber Creek Next three: Westlake, Mckinney-Boyd, Dripping Springs
  19. Final block of the day! Vandegrift: That opening hit. Vandy has some of my favorite musical selections this year - everything ties together so well. There are so many performers on that field and yet, the drill is stupid clean. The brass book is so hard, but they execute it to near perfection. The guard work in the ballad is mesmerizing. They are RUNNING in the closer. Dare I say, best performance of the day? Regardless, this show is absolutely worthy of a medal, I only wish there were more than three. Round Rock: That backfield opening is just gorgeous. They very quickly demonstrate so many musical skills with their technique, volume, and ensemble sound. Not to mention that they look great on the field. The way they use Rite of Spring is so great. They march and play so well, I could see them placing really high tomorrow night. Marcus: The soloists do such a great job at the beginning. The way the ensemble is able to maintain their sonic structure regardless of dynamic is what's given them so much success. They may not play as loud as other bands, but they will play and march as well as the best bands in the state. The drumline is rocking out, and the winds handle their individual responsibilities really well. You know what you're going to get from Marcus every year, and it never disappoints. Mckinney-Boyd: Wow! They can pump out some noise. They are able to demonstrate some nice dynamic control in the ballad. They are really good at putting out that sound even on the move. And they are moving quick too in the closer. A really great performance! Dripping Springs: I love the music in the opening. The mellophones play their book so well. I absolutely love the tarp changes, it just reminds me of how colorful the entire field design is for them. They have been solid in every performance I've seen from them - a very consistent band! Cy-Fair: I love the costume effects. Nice technical passages from brass and woodwinds. I really dig all the ways the props and costumes make the band "vanish". The Hide and Seek rendition is nice as well, with some beautiful guard work. YEAH TRUMPET. I love seeing teachers get hyped for something like that. A really fun show and a super solid run! Permian: Yes! A killer mellophone solo followed by an out of nowhere ensemble hit is how you start a show! The whole band plays with such great technique. They also make some beautiful sounds. Overall a very accessible program that plays to their strengths. The drill is super duper clean! Great performance all around. Could we see them again tomorrow night? Dawson: They have some great musical selections. The guard is super solid, and running all over the field! The closer is excellent in every facet, and the band brings a great energy to the entire performance. Clear Brook: Tbh I could barely hear the band because of the stream audio - I'm not sure if it was the pit's electronics that are turned up so high or the microphones. The soloists sound good and the band moves well, I just wish I could hear them. Congratulations to all bands who performed today! Top to bottom, this is maybe the best state marching contest I've had the chance to watch. I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store!
  20. That's what I thought. I think the top 4-5 is so fluid, and I think 6-10 could change a bit as well. I know that big shifts is rare in BOA finals competitions, but everyone is so close right now that it wouldn't surprise me if we saw some bigger jumps/drops tomorrow.
  21. Oh I fully am expecting chaos tomorrow. I will be surprised if there is little movement between prelims and finals results.
  22. 🤣 As much as I love making predictions before and during the contests, I am so glad that my rankings don't actually have any weight in the actual results 😅
