@DeadMascot PSJA was sooo good!! I see why they won Area G, they are putting out a big sound for their size! Soloist were good, great work from the guard, and other than some small cover down issues, the drill was fairly clean. Really hope they are able to keep up this successes next season, great year for them, great job PSJA!!

Oh and that Drum Major was doing some EXCELLENT conducting, tons of emotions in that performance!

And you could see her tears when it was over. That program is on an upward trajectory.

I’m so happy PSJA North made it to state! They have had some of the most fun shows I’ve seen in the Area!

The tri cities have to be on cloud 9.  First PSJA High gets a big send off to State then their other schools qualify for finals. So awesome for North qualifies for State. And it’s appropriate! PSJA is the OG! Then North came around in 93, followed by Memorial and Southwest. How freaking cool for them.

These schools aren't my alma mater, but I do follow what's happening in the RGV. I don't think this is a case of a school complaining because they felt they should have won but in reality the judges were correct ---NO , the judges really did get this wrong at Area G.  The best band didn't advance.  (I haven't heard anyone from that school actually complain).  That school does have multiple all state/all region players and dominates the audition process.

Watch the videos!!!  You decide.  But all I can say is there's a bunch of people that watched this contest and DON'T AGREE wit the outcome.

So this is why we aren't the judges. We don't have all the years of education/training/learning that these judges have. We are just spectators. I learned that the hard way when my girl first got into band.  You mention THAT school. We all know who that school is. You referring to them as THAT school doesn't make them look good even though you say they aren't your alma mater.

I went ahead and spent my lunch hour looking at PSJA, Alexander, United and Hanna videos from Area on YouTube. Honestly? A couple of quick observations.

    • If you are an OLD from the RGV like me (I haven't live there in 24 years) you remember what PSJA was like. We were the last ones to do ANYTHING new or innovative. We didn't get a color guard until 1991. Our drill designs were blah for years and didn't really change until 1990. So seeing how much has changed is GREAT!
    • I honestly love seeing how innovative the shows are in the Valley. I was with my cousins this week at my aunt's funeral. Her daughter marched for PSJA the first year they made it to State and she and I started exchanging stories. She was shocked at the idea that I paid $1600 a year in band fees every year for my daughter while she paid nothing at all at PSJA. She said they would have the restaurant fundraiser here and there, and I said, "so did we!" She said she was willing to pay so that they could have a drill designer, choreographers and the like so that they could compete with the upstate bands, but she knew that she would be one of the few parents that could afford it. The fact that these bands are able to put on the quality of shows that they do with the limited budgets that they do is amazing. Keep up the great work.
    • As far as the shows go, I agree with the judges evaluations with those 4 bands. I also agree with the posters above in that the bands from this area are improving drastically. I mean, compare these shows to shows form 2019! Holy smokes they are phenomenal! It sucks that they can only take 3 bands to state from this area.

For the kids that read this forum, don't listen to the adult fans. We are just fans and don't know crap. You keep loving your craft and work hard.

    Congratulations to all state qualifiers!

On a side note, which I meant to post during finals but alas...

To Westwood parents (and all parents really): there needs to be some internal discussion regarding etiquette in the stands. Your excitement for your bands entrance is admirable, it's great to see such support for a program. Although, your attitude towards another band during their performance is distasteful. I've already been frustrated with general bad audience etiquette across all of the contests I've been to so far this season, but I feel like laughing at color guard drops in a show is kinda a new low. While a few don't define a nation, a general re-emphasis in audience etiquette would be best going forward.

I don't know what's in the air this year but with every competition I find myself wanting to leave after being in the stands with parents for awhile. WW is an egregious example but it's been embarrassingly bad all around with parents this season.

Wow! This doesn’t sound like the Westwood band parents that I used to sit with. But it also has been two years for me since I did that. I will pass this info along to their directors and ensure that it gets addressed

  5. Yes I am calling out my bias for Westwood as a former guard mom and announcer for them.

    • Westwood's show last night was CLEAN. The guard was spot on. The music is fantastic. I think this is the first show since Believe that I can honestly say is mature and just flat out great for them. That ballad and how they rearranged it since BOA Austin..OMG makes me want to cry.
    • Cedar Ridge looks visually stunning on the field. But it almost looked list night like they were tired? I don't know how to quite describe how I felt watching them. I guess I kept comparing it to last year's show and it just isn't that show. But that's just my opinion. I love the colors. And I love the guard hair extensions...they literally make me want to go out and buy some.
    • It is so weird for me to see Round Rock in different unis. Great show like always.
    • Stony Point is so darn grown up. I'm so proud of how far they have come in a few short years. Their show is really good.
    • McNeil..another wow they are growing up. I can't get over how far the RRISD bands have come over the years. This show is really fantastic.
    • Weiss. Their band seems smaller this year. Great show though. Nice and tight and crisp tight lines.
    • Hutto was the band that blew me away. #1, they must have gotten a new band director because their drill and must was completely different than anything I had seen from them in the past. HOLY CRAP. I took some video and sent it to my daughter who replied, "Are we sure that isn't a RRISD or LISD band?" Their band is huge with a great field presence and excellent guard. Their drill design and music was great. #2, they got new uniforms this year and they look great out on that field. I wasn't expecting this performance from Hutto. I mean, it came out of nowhere. But remember, I'm a nobody. I'm just a fan. But it was really great.
    • Manor I thought did 150 percent better than last year. They are a tiny band for 6A compared to everyone else. Their drill was lovely and so different and way more intricate than last year. They are making their way and getting better and better every year. Way to go!
    • RRJV was great as well. I think its freaking cool that they get to march at region. As a freshman in hs, we did the same. We marched as a freshman band at region and we were the only band in our region to do so. It was great! So I'm so glad that these kids get to do the same. They were really wonderful.

It was a great night and I'm so glad I got to see them. Area should be fun.

Panel 1 - Cedar Park, Cedar Ridge, Westlake, Rouse, Vandegrift, LD Bell

Panel 2 - Round Rock, Vista Ridge, CTJ, Leander, James Bowie, Ronald Reagan, Marcus, Wakeland, The Woodlands

    Looks pretty unbalanced to me.

Flip flip Westwood with Westlake. Westwood beat Westlake in Austin. And they will be fresh from St. Louis as well. I also wonder about Bowie.

There's some decent quality vids of Cedar Ridge up now!

Westwood had their marchathon this weekend. The link was on their facebook page but it looks like they took it down. They have bright new show tops and the drum majors have new unis as well. It's different from what I've seen them do in the past. The show didn't feel cutesy like in the past. But it's not Believe from 2019. Their ballad was lovely.

No predictions or anything like that from me anymore. I don't live in Central Texas anymore and I likely won't be attending any competitions from now on. I will be using my Saturdays enjoying and agonizing over Aggie Football. I do live down the street from  Rudder High in Bryan and can hear them practice every now and then. I think about going over there then my daughter texts me from class at A&M and says, "Mom, I'm not in high school anymore..remember?"
