  1. I feel success in UIL (or BOA) marching is determined by mostly by these factors, in priority order: 1) Quality of show design (memorable show that highlights strengths and hides weaknesses of the group) 2) Size of band, especially brass section 3) Quality of students (musical training) 4) Quality and quantity of full time band directors on staff I know there are many other factors like community support, funding, etc that affect those 4 but that's how I see it in my head.
  2. I hear ya and don't disagree. Other schools got better while the Mansfield schools sort of stayed where they were at last year. I still think if Mansfield ISD staffed the high school band programs like all the other districts in Area B we'd be seeing more schools make finals and possibly sneak into State, but again that's just my opinion.
  3. Saying this as a Mansfield ISD alum... I'm not necessarily surprised. There are really talented kids and teachers in MISD high schools but they are going up against schools with 1, 2, sometimes 3 (in the case of Coppell) more full time band directors than the Mansfield schools have. When you have two "wind" directors for 170-200 (or more) wind players it becomes challenging for them to really address individual or section issues, so you rely lots on big picture "ensemble" teaching and hope the kids and leadership team are "self correcting". I could be way off but these are just my two cents
  4. Good to hear there will (assuming Crowley gets added on the schedule??) be 7 spots for state. Even then, that means that only one of these schools that are strong enough to make State in almost any other area of the state will make it in to Area B: Southlake Carroll, Martin, Lake Highlands, Berkner, Haltom, Lake Ridge, Mansfield, Highland Park, Pearce, Duncanville, etc.... (apologies if I left anyone off)
  5. This means only 6 advance to State...I assume people were saying 7 earlier because they counted Coppell JV in there, but they can't advance to Area due to their classification.... Can anyone confirm this? Really unfortunate that once again several bands that could easily advance to state in another area will be left out.
  6. Based on this video, I won't be paying for the stream. Not one high cam angle? All bad/low/random angles of the show the whole time? Yikes... Btw awesome band. Wish I could see them live.
  7. Something to note about the Mansfield schools... they all have one fewer band director than most of the 6A schools they are competing with at the finals/advancement to state level. Not counting the percussion director/specialist, MISD schools all only have one head director and one assistant director. This leaves the assistant directors at the larger programs often teaching all of the non/sub non-varsity bands and stretched thin on other responsibilities they could be helping with.
  8. After seeing Duncanville Invitational results, I still think this top 3 is a lock in any order: Keller Coppell Waxahachie I honestly think the 4th and 5th spots are LD Bell's and Timber Creek's to lose, but of course Southlake, Duncanville, Berkner, Lake Highlands, Trinity, Haltom, Mansfield, Lake Ridge, will have something to say about that Edit: forgot to mention Keller Central and Fossil Ridge...its clear that some really good bands may end up not going to state or even in finals
  9. Keller- Lock for state Coppell- lock for state (Waxahachie)- Probable state (LD Bell)- probable state (Timber Creek)- probable state (Central)- potential state (Berkner)- potential state (Mansfield)-potential state (Duncanville)- potential state (Southlake Carroll)- potential state (J.J. Pierce)- potential state (Lake Highlands)-potential state (Lake Ridge)- potential state Other than Keller and Coppell being locks for state, the other 3 state spots are a toss-up, though LD Bell, Timber Creek, and Waxahachie are likely favorites. The rest of the bands have a chance too, and some great bands will be sitting out of finals...
  10. Did anyone catch Lake Ridge, Summit, or Mansfield? It'd be cool (but very difficult) to see an MISD band crack finals in an area this deep.
