  1. I agree! Three very great shows and three very contrasting shows at that. Pioneer has had their foot on the gas these past few weeks and will surprise a lot of folks I think. Very aggressive show. I can’t believe Weiss is just in year two! All very young programs on the rapid rise.
  2. I think we may have some surprises in the 4&5 slots. Given the finalists draw order let’s see how things play out.
  3. How are the groups doing so far? That first block had a lot of finalist contenders.
  4. After seeing some videos of the bands recent performances, I’d say it’s a dog fight between Rouse & Pioneer. Two very different styles of shows being performed really well by both groups. Very curious to see how the AA plays out. It’s definitely going to be an exciting weekend in SA all around.
  5. Yes they have! With two weeks to go it’s going to be a very interesting race between Rouse and Pioneer for the AA title. Perhaps the initial weather caused some delay at the start? Regardless they seem to be on a full tank now. Best of luck to both groups in SA!
  6. Not too familiar with how they faired in Contests other than BOA McAllen this year which they did wonderfully. I personally went off of how these programs have done over the course of the past two seasons going off of the various BOAs, State Marching Contest and local contests. Looks like a very bright future for the program.
  7. 1 - Roma 2 - Pioneer 3 - Homer Hanna 4 - United 5 - Alexander 6 - Edinburg North 7 - Harlingen 8 - Hidalgo 9 - Harlingen South 10 - Lopez/Rio Grande City Given staff changes and local contests for the past couple years this is my top 10.
  8. I was pulling for Roma as well. Such a great program. I was also happy to see Pioneer working it’s way up the ladder. Interesting side note: Pioneer is only in year 4 of existence. Year one (2014) Pioneer & Roma received a Second Division at their Region Marching Contest. 2015 Both groups advanced to SMC (Roma 15, Pioneer 23). 2016 was a very successful year for both programs as well. And here 2017 both groups make the trip back to SMC (Roma 11, Pioneer 18). It’s been pretty enjoyable seeing these two programs push each other in Region 15 as well as Area G. I look forward to seeing them continue this rise and represent the Valley and Area G with such poise and class. Congrats again to these great hardworking students and their staffs.
  9. BOA uses a 10-12 school population for determining class. UIL uses total school population.
  10. I’ll offer up some insight on dark horses from the south: Roma - Roma HS has consistently been an honor band finalist as well as churning out All Staters with machine like precision. Also, Roma MS is one of their feeders and have also consistently been Honor Band Finalists and have come very close on a few occasions to win it all. Roma MS also was selected to perform at Midwest not too long ago. This group has a really rich and powerful sound to them which will definitely be a treat for anyone that sees them. Pioneer - This school is only in its 4th year of existence and has quickly asserted itself as one of the powerhouses of Area D as is climbing the ladder in BOA as well. They are definitely not just a one trick pony as they really are finding themselves as a jack of all trades with them excelling in all facets of competition from concert, jazz, All State, winterguard, indoor percussion. They have some great design going on with their show this year and are executing at a really high level which has been a driving force in their success. I’m really excited to see how these two programs will fair on Wednesday. It’s been a treat to watch these two slug it out all season. These two have a really strong chance of making the night show. Lopez - 2017 Honor Band, gorgeous playing throughout their show from soloist and small ensembles. Some great playing from this group. Sharyland - This program has a long history of great bands and this year is another great example of that. Show features some nice woodwind features and some really well executed visual moments. Rio Grande City - RGC has been on a recent ascension and this program followed up its first SMC two years ago with qualifying back to back. A really nice show repertoire this year.
