No I think it’s probably just a coincidence

Crown’s ramp was longer and wasn’t as high off the ground.

Wow this is kind of crazy. As far as I know, McBryde and Bown were really the driving forces behind making Timber Creek so great these past few years. Before coming to TC, McBryde was an assistant director at Keller and Bown was a drum major for Carolina Crown in 2013 so they both obviously had a good perspective on the activity. It’s going to be interesting to see how this brand new leadership affects a band that is really really good, especially since the new head director isn’t from Texas or a band that is prominent in the BOA scene. TC is set up with what is going to be an awesome show design and I hope the best for them going forwards. It’s always crazy to lose two amazing directors especially when things are just about to ramp up for the students.

It’s not uncommon for assistant directors to take a larger role in the marching side of things. Head directors obviously play a larger role with concert band. I bet that the impact of this staff change isn’t seen on the field at all.

I agree. The last time they attended more than 2 BOA competitions was in 2015 when they attended 4. And although they have won their fair share of contests over the past few years, they have yet to make a giant splash in the BOA scene despite their consistent improvement. Last year was looking to be very promising when they beat Hebron in visual and tied FloMo in music at BOA Bedford (though most of that can be attributed to inconsistent judging and Hebron’s mic mishap). Things fizzled out slightly after they just barely missed the top half of BOA San Antonio (placing .17 points behind Vista Ridge in prelims) and getting an unfortunate performance time in finals of both BOA and UIL State finals. Thought I can’t imagine how stressful it would’ve been dealing with the Macy’s Pardade at the same time competitions and rehearsals were getting constantly rained out (I have my fingers crossed that the weather is nice this year and Waco actually happens for the first time). Will this be the year they break into the top half? Who knows as the armada of GN attendees and bands like Vista and FloMo will be looking to hold their ground. Anyway, a first BOA regional win for Keller would be very well deserved.

One topic that always comes up is the fact that some of the best bands don’t always bring their best shows to Nats. I think we saw this in 2017 with Fractured Moments. It was an awesome show but it tried too hard to one-up Leonardo’s Dream. I think it pushed the students past a point where they could put out a super clean and refined show. I think something similar happened with CTJ this past year. 2017 was arguably their most successful season yet but 2018 was a show where the students visibly struggled for most of the season. The end product was still phenomenal but didn’t capture the magic of the previous year. I guess what I am trying to get across is that it is kind of impossible for directors/designers to recreate the magic after “winning big”.

So going into Nats, none of the Texas attendees “won big” last year. Hebron was the closest by placing third in San Antonio. I would absolutely love for a Texas band to win Nats but their biggest competition is Carmel, who seems to be able to recreate enough magic each year to stay on top.

Obviously we have seen VERY little from these bands so everything will probably change.

Hebron is my favorite to take the eagle from Texas. IMO they are one of the most consistent bands. All they really need is a more engaging visual design and story to create an undeniable package. Unpopular opinion: I think their best show overall is Uncharted Waters because it combined a simple yet well executed and tangible visual theme with impeccable music and drill. Still, any of their shows from the past 4 years are pretty awe inspiring.

CTJ could easily bring a show that is capable of taking the eagle, but struggled with consistency issues as of late. 9th at Nats in 2016 was a shockingly low placement for a band that has won San Antonio in 2014 and 2017 and has placed in the top 5 every year since 2011. 2018 felt similar to 2017 in a way that was a little stale. The sequel idea scares me a little because recreating such a magical show is really risky. Also creating a show inspired by a movie releasing in the same year either sounds totally awesome or a grab at a concept that isn’t as original as it should be.

Leander has definitely pushed the activity with their theatrical shows and out-there and modern music and visual choices. Radioactive just might be the show that cements Leander’s identity while also pushing the band to new heights.

In the end, I’m just excited to witness some amazing artistic performances by every band. Can marching season come faster please?

The props and tarps are getting more elaborate each year, but there is a major myth about where that money comes from and how much impact it has on a program’s on-field success.  Pull up a tall glass of mulch and let’s talk about how fundraising helps a band program in more ways than expected. Thanks for the love and support!!!

I just got around to watching the preview videos for Vista, Vandy, and CP, and I can already tell that this year is going to be awesome (as usual ). I’m pretty confident that this year’s BOA San Antonio will be the best one yet. Vista really stands out to me because the music is the only one that is noticeably very dirty (I haven’t seen Leander yet). I think one of the greatest things that you can do as a teacher/designer is to give your students something that is too hard for them at first. It forces improvement, so I’m especially excited for Vista this year as well as Leander.
