Now that I live about 1.5 hours from Indianapolis, I'll most likely attend pretty much every year. So I should be there in 2024 (as I was in 2023).

Having spent the weekend in Indianapolis for the first time, and also as someone who was a staunch supporter of a traveling Grand Nats, I've come to realize that there is absolutely 0 chance that GN comes to San Antonio.
The infrastructure at Lucas Oil Stadium is not just for football, but also absolutely designed for hosting 90 bands in a weekend. Practice halls (plural), all of them containing full sized indoor fields for groups to reserve and practice, halls for entire bands to relax, food, hotels, nothing at all like mess that is the Alamodome and surrounding SA.
Would it be cool? Absolutely. Will it ever happen? Never. Lucas Oil was designed for band, too. It's the perfect stadium.

Hello there Marian Catholic!!! I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were our class A program, because that was incredible! Huge fan of that music book, and omg the metal percussion feature was SO tight! Soloist were great all around, and for their size, they are executing a pretty hard music book and playing with such a big sound! Some visual dirt but I think they have a very strong chance of performing again tonight, great job Marian Catholic!

Made it to Lucas Oil just as PCEP went on, so was able to catch TWHS in person. Visual was great. The uniforms pop against the field. Music was well done. Overall strong performance.

close!! i would still prob give it to Avon 2019, they move just a bit better and have denser spinning phrases. but the top to bottom high cam depth of tw's guard is pretty mind boggling!!
stellar run from them. im biased but that was by far the cleanest vis show ive seen at this contest from upstairs. super duper effective too. ironically the weakest parts musically for me are the small ensemble and soloist parts, weird instrumentation too. 1st trumpets still struggling w/ intervals in the ballad a little, but it's rather challenging.

    BRIDGELAND!!!
this is true. different weightings for sure, but more similar than in past. actually i think the influx of dci/boa ppl is contributing to tw's somewhat increased success in UIL the past couple years relative to pre-system change when they always got 8th or whatever.
that said BOA has some crucial differences even w/ the overlap. for example i think tw will be happy that BOA's individual music judge is on the field and can sample woodwinds during tutti moments, unlike the UIL judge lol.

Short answer is yes, the scoring is that much different. As a start, music performance at UIL is 4/7 judges (~57%), at BOA it is 20% with Music Ensemble and Music Individual averaged for that 20%. Then you have GE judges (2 for Music and 1 for Visual) that are each 20% of the score, which UIL doesn't really account for, although the design judge has some overlap.
So just some of the differences which can impact the placements between UIL and BOA.

Welcome, Blue Devilcoats! I'm very BOA-minded, so I see a show like TWHS' and immediately think, "Well that's obviously winning visual and GE." But this is UIL, so it's really going to come down to more music performance-related things. It'll be interesting to see where this lands!

From my own experience, there is no higher compliment to a teacher than the knowledge that you inspired your own students to teach as well.

The Woodlands HS Guard is guided by three of the finest, most creative and energetic teachers I have ever known…led by Cynthia Robbins and ably assisted by Joseph Danforth and Tiffany Quinstein.

The Music and Visual Ensemble scores absolutely include design and construction considerations.  EVERYTHING in BOA is tied into design except for the individual scores, and even those are affected by the range of vocabulary and style the students have been asked to perform.  Music GE is also unavoidably tied to visual GE (from the judges perspective), which is unfortunate because that involves a lot of things that are mostly outside the students' control.
It's all about how impactful the "moments" are, and that impact lives on a spectrum that varies by judge and is affected by design choices and how well the students execute.  Even a perfectly performed show that the judges think is poorly designed will not score super well, while on the flip side you can have a brilliant show design that's been dummy-proofed that scores well with a moderately executed performance because the design is communicated at a high level.
There's definitely some difference of opinion on how this should be approached in the judging world.  2019 Grand Nationals is a perfect example.  Vandegrift won because they had a well designed show that was executed at a very high level, but Avon had a more complex and difficult approach that ultimately fell just short of the gold despite BOA changing the sheets that year to give more credit for difficulty vs achievement.  I personally prefer watching the Vandegrift show because I just think they march and play better (and artistry is its own form of effect), but there's certainly disagreement over the matter.
Ultimately, we see many Texas bands starting to figure out how to be successful in both, which is why 13 of 14 6A state finalists were also finalists at BOA SA a few days before.  That last one attended both but has definitely figured the UIL game out much more effectively than the BOA game.

Actually, that refined style you're associating with DFW comes from the University of Houston, originally pioneered by Eddie Green. It has spread throughout the state and takes different forms depending on who the director is and especially who their primary clinician or mentor is.  It has been reduced by many people over the years to a very bland but technically very precise approach.  Mr. Green had bands that were anything but bland, though.

Carmel is always so darn artful lol. overall id say it's the cleanest perf ive seen today, shout-out of course to the guard, only guard in the country that approaches tw's top to bottom depth and clarity of technique imo. way to go Eryn Boone for keeping what Rosie built alive and well!!!
def more of a brain tickler, there are other shows more viscerally exciting and that im sure a general audience will like more, but for what the show is aiming for it's great. guess my main criticism would be communication of theme. besides the plague masks what about the show says prophecy? it feels like you could call it any other number of names. just call it great drill + great music lol.
oh yeah and that blue fabric they pull out was friggin' gorgeous!!
