  1. Reagan 2015 when they played that incredible ballad and the dancers trickled out onto the field.  Every time I saw that show I'd look around and see people wiping tears away. It was beautiful and full of joy.

Reagan 2018 loved everything about the show from the moment the pianist was rolled onto the field while playing.

Reagan 2019 Mind blowing. Just a truly stunning show and again--when the visual ensemble lifted the gold flags and ran around the entire field or when the drum major and the VE member ran through the circles that opened as they went through. Just a jaw dropping show.

Vista Ridge 2018 state finals. When the trombone player finished his solo and had that huge grin on his face, I knew they had won it. You could just see reflected in his face the special thing that was taking place on the field.

BOASA Finals 2017.  Just everything about that whole finals was incredible. I'm sorry for every person who didn't get to see it live.

Marcus's show that had the gates as props. That show blew me away.

The Woodlands show that had the train gates. That was such a well done show. I remember thinking all the bands at that competition were great and then they took the field and I knew they were on a completely different level with that show than anyone else that day.

FlowerMound 2015's Leonardo show. Truly a stunning concept and I'll never forget the moment of almost reverent silence on  the stadium when the flying machine "took flight."

FlowerMound's Surreal show. The saxaphone players in the eggs. The singing heads. Loved it.

FlowerMound's 2018 show. I loved the innovative use of props and the pop art going on on the field. And their marching was so clean and precise.

Leander's Choral Works in 2015. Still sad we didn't get to see that show go head to head with Reagan and FlowerMound that year.

  2. Of the shows I've seen live, Reagan is my favorite. I am partial to them, but 2 things about this season: 1st, I loved Loop and was concerned they wouldn't be able to top it. I am so happy to report that my concerns were unfounded. Secret World just blows me away in a way Loop didn't, which is saying something given my love for Loop.  Second, live, Secret World is stunning on every level. There's no part of the show where you're left saying, "It was great except for...(fill in a weak spot)." Every section/performer is just spot on. It's a powerful show.

Next to Reagan, of the shows I've seen live, Vandegrift is my second. I love their drill and their brass is impeccable.

I haven't seen any of the Dallas-area shows, so it could turn out that one of them will change my mind. We'll see!

  3. With regard to the Marcus show from 2015--there are very few shows from 2015 out there on Youtube because that was the year that BOA and copyrighters went head to head over BOA selling videos from competitions. No videos were sold that year and BOA aggressively went after videos posted online after the competitions. FloMarching started up the next year, I think? But that year people who didn't go to BOA San Antonio or Grand Nats were basically out of luck if they were hoping to see a show online.

  4. I am curious about your band's marching audition requirements.

    1) Does your band require a marching audition? Are there any physical elements/requirements other than being able to march? (i.e. Do you learn some choreography and have to perform it as part of the audition? Do you have to show physical strength like push-ups/sit-ups/squats or be able to run a certain distance or anything like that?)

    2) What happens if you don't pass the marching audition? Do you

    A) perform in the concert season only?

B )stand on the sidelines during competitions and perform in the stands at football games?

    C) have a varsity level marching band and a JV marching band, so you perform with the JV?

    D) perform with your marching band as an alternate, rotating in and out of a position, usually performing in prelims at competitions?

    E) become a prop master?

    Or:
    F) a combination of the above which is _____________________________________________________.

    G) none of the above. Instead we _________________________________________________________.

  5. This is of course a matter of opinion. You don't give parameters for your request--the top 10 this year? The top 10 based on overall results?

That being said, I'll take a whack at it based on which bands consistently make finals at BOA San Antonio over the past 5-ish years.

In no particular order the top 9 would be:

    Marcus

    CTJohnson

    Reagan

    the Woodlands

    Vandegrift

    Leander

    Flowermound

    Hebron

    Cedar Park

Those 9 have been the most consistent in the past 5 years and/or more. I think you could make a good case for any of the following bands to take the #10 spot:

    Hendrickson
    James Bowie

    Keller

    Round Rock

    LD Bell

    Cedar Ridge

And then you have, based on the latest season, the "ones to watch" which in my opinion are:

    Vista Ridge

    Seven Lakes

    Westlake

  6. hmm... Has anyone here seen this video?

(sorry, I had to remove the link, but the video is one from BOA SR finals by a mello player at CTJ)

It's actually really cool, and I'd like to do something like this, but under the BOA FAQ it says that no type of camera is allowed on the field. I'm not sure if that includes the performers, but another thing is that a student in my band last year did a gopro video during BOA SR finals as well. Anyone's thoughts? I know it's not entirely state related, but I'd like to hear your opinions on this.

Years ago I attended Grand Nationals and I recall that they (BOA) showed a video on the jumboscreen from a band's performance during prelims taken with a Gopro that was strapped to a marcher. It was BOA who put the camera on the student to begin with, however. It wasn't something the band did on their own.

  7. 1. Ronald Reagan

    2. Flowermound

    3. Vista Ridge

    4. CTJ

    5. Vandegrift

    6. Hebron

    7. Woodlands

    8. Keller

    9. James Bowie

    10. Leander

    11. Marcus

    12. Coppell

    13. Waxahachie

    14. Hendrickson

    15. Westlake

    16. Cedar Ridge

    17. Prosper

    18. Pearland

    19. Round Rock

    20. Seven Lakes

    21. Oak Ridge

    22. Duncanville

I'd say Coppell and Reagan's spots could change mainly due to their early times, but when has either of them not made State Finals? Interesting to see how Leander does considering their performance at area, same with Keller.

Reagan did not make state finals in 2010.

  8. My friend texted me.Her kid is in the Reagan band. She said,"We had a scare tonight. The guard bus was sideswiped by a hit and run driver on the way to the game. Fortunately no one was hurt!"

Thank the Lord for mercy! So scary. Grateful everyone is ok. I hope those kids take some Aleve tonight. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but hey! People out there on the roads! Drive safe!

  9. So because this may apply to all of the regional contests I thought I'd post this question here instead of in just one of the regional threads.

There is a big chance of rain for many of the regional contests. What happens if a region cannot complete the adjudication of all of the bands in the region due to rain? Has this ever happened before? Because if recent trends hold, a region (or two or three or four) could end of having to cancel a contest due to rain.
