  1. I would be surprised to see Carmel taken out of 1st - but we will see
  2. there are a number of bands that have dance teams - I think one of the Austin bands (Hendrickson maybe) is known as a marching band and a dance team - it is in their title. but there are many that use dancers now It allows them to expand their guard and add a new dimension to the show -
  3. I was thinking the same thing - will a full show in September become the norm in Texas? I will have to go back and find my quote from a few weeks ago - I predicted CTJ would win SA based on the data. for the last 4 or 5 years I looked at, any band that won a Texas regional by more than 1.65 points has won San Antonio Data is king - and as tight as the scoring was (.30 between 1st and 3rd in prelims) they had a full point win in finals congrats to CTJ - heck of a show and a great season - 2 regional and a super regional win in their season - shame that show wont be in Indy next week - maybe next year
  4. lets see what this weeks standing look like after BOA SA 2. Flower Mound 6th in Finals (below # 3, 4, 5, 7, 9) 3. Avon 4th in Finals (below # 4, 5, 7) 4. Hebron 2nd in Finals (below # 5) 5. Claudia Taylor Johnson 1st in Finals (Above # 2, 3, 4) 7. Vandegrift 3rd in Finals (Above # 2, 3) 9. Reagan 5th in Finals (above # 2) should be interesting - 11 other programs in the top 30 that performed that will impact the standing (I assume)
  5. I agree - I met a number of Avon parents over the past 2 days - hope they enjoyed their stay in Texas and decide to make this a routine trip in their marching season. I stuck around to watch the CTJ encore (had to see it again) - and saw that the Avon band was in the stands to watch and cheer for the band - class act - safe travels
  6. I don't see anyone sweeping captions in Prelims or Finals - too much heat in SA for that
  7. there is more to BOA than Music - visual and effect are key and at the end of the day, it is about the show, and can you pull the audience into the theme of that show. the LISD have a great music clarity and they should be proud of their show, but there is more to it on the field otherwise this would just be a UIL compitition Good Luck tomorrow
  8. will say HI tomorrow - enjoyed sitting in front of you all tonight and hearing your comments as you watched the performances - looking forward to a great day of marching arts tomorrow
  9. I agree - from where I was sitting in the press box - the CTJ performance was spot on - The entire lower bowl was on their feet before the show ended - "Standing O" - I was floored by the sound. lots of great shows today - but I would agree that they had the best of the Friday's shows and took the roof off the dome - just WOW!!
  10. I agree that the top 5 are likely FloMo, Avon, CTJ, Hebron and TWHS - in what order is anyone's guess. I could see this one have a wide swing between prelims and finals
  11. I would agree - they have both have THE show and it will be a shame to not see them battling it out at Grand Nats this year - so I look forward to seeing it played out in San Antonio may the best TEXAS band win
  12. Met the Dan's a few years ago - and looking forward to seeing you this weekend - appreciate what you do and hope all that enjoy your services pitch in to support it so we can continue to do the same for years to come. safe travels to the Alamo City
  13. I would have to agree with your analysis while I have only seen the Avon show on FloMarching, I have seen the 3 Texas bands this week in person or on video from their most recent runs and think you are on target My though (that with $8 will get a coffee at Starbucks) - I feel FloMo and CTJ have a shot at all 3 captions. but that is not to discount Hebron or Avon's chances This show will come down to who puts the best show on the field in finals - Nothing personal but I hope it goes to a Texas band side note - enjoyed another great year of following the shows on TXBands - just made my donation to support - Please do the same - I want to do this again next year
  14. I dont see Marcus in the top 5 in San Antonio - not to offend anyone - the music is awesome but the show does not have the "gusto" to challenge the field at a BOA Event
  15. I have been in/around 3 of the districts mentioned above. I think the strength and focus of the program is dictated by the director that is put in place. what is their desire - to focus on great music (concert bands) - a great visual marching arts program - or the great ones that want it all - an honor band that play great music while they fly around the field. over the years we see bands that fall with the loss of a director or 2 and they may slump and with the right hire they may come back in following years - IMO, it takes 3 things 1. Director and team that have a vision and can motivate the kids 2. Parents/Boosters that are willing to put in the time, hard work and yes - money either out of pocket or fundraising 3. A District that is supportive of the arts, and sees the marching arts as more than someone to play music for the drill team at half time
  16. I would agree - there are some great districts that support the arts programs such as band, but at the end of the day I would assume all bands struggle with the cost. as many have mentioned before about moving GNATS around to allow for more bands to participate in GNATS due to the cost of taking a few hundred kids and tons of equipment half way across the country. I doubt there are too many (if any) districts that would cover the cost.
  17. Great Friday afternoon Block 4:00 Reagan 4:15 Henderickson 4:30 Churchill 6:15 CT Johnson 7:00 Leander too cool
  18. I am a Stats person - it is how I pay the rent there has never been a 3 time winner in San Antonio though many have come close - this would include - 1998/1999 Churchill 2000/2001 LD Bell 2004/2005 R Reagan 2008/2009 LD Bell 2015/2016 FloMo Fun Facts about San Antonio San Antonio started as a Regional in 1994 there was NO San Antonio Event in 1996 and 1997 San Antonio was originally an early Regional - In September of each year In 2002 the SA Regional moved to November In 2005 the San Antonio event was moved to "Super Regional: R Reagan won both the last regional and first Super Regional (2004 and 2005) The only Out -Of -State band to win San Antonio was Carmel in 2002 (prior to being a Super-Regional) Back to Back winners include Churchill, Bell, Reagan, Bell (Yes, again,) Flomo Since becoming a Super Regional in 2005 - there have only been 6 winners of the SA Super Regional LD Bell - 4 Marcus - 3 FloMo - 2 CTJ/Reagan/TWHS - i each this could be the best SA Super Regional Ever - I got my tickets - do you
  19. I was thinking the same thing - with the bands that will be in SA and the time they still have to prepare, I have to think we will see a 95+ in San Antonio - way too many top notch programs this year to not break that threshold. but time will tell so looking forward to the show in the dome
  20. I agree, i dont buy the "there was less competition" so it counted less - it was still a BOA scored event and not only was it the only score to break 90 so far this year - in at least the last 4 years (did not look further back than that) there has not been a score break 90 in a regional - only super regionals. but it will all come out in the wash with 2 super regionals this weekend that have 8-10 bands ranked bands - the San Antonio Super will eliminate the speculation
  21. CTJ's director posted on this myth last year - it was just to rest the kids for GNats trip - not any intention of dropping out of UIL
  22. while some see no value in the HornRank national rankings - they remain a highlight of my season - for those that may never make it to GNats, they mean alot this weeks results that impact the top 10 as I see it - welcome your thoughts #2 FlowerMound 1stover Hebron PEMI - Non-BOA #3 CTJohnson 1stat Midland BOA Regional - 90.20 #4 Hebron 2nd to FloMo PEMI - Non-BOA #7 Vandegrift 2ndi n TMC to RR TMC - Non-BOA –88.23 #9 Reagan 1st over Vgrift TMC - Non-BOA – 88.63 San Antonio will be a huge show this year (yes we say that every year)
  23. all that said - I still want a Horn Rank Shirt - keep up the great work!!!
