Samuel Culper reacted to Laura Crook in Discontinuing Color Guard
The Round Rock High School Color Guard was informed by the band director today in class that he is terminating the color guard program after this year. He is replacing them with a dance team. My daughter started color guard in the 7th grade and is now a freshman. She was planning on doing guard in college. Now she feels like her entire world is ending. She eats breaths and sleeps guard. It’s all she does. In less than 5 minutes one man destroyed her goals, hopes, and dreams. He didn’t bat an eye or even appear to care. 45 girls are now devastated. Has anyone else experienced this? This band made finals at state, boa super regional in San Antonio and at grand nationals. I think I will probably pull my kid and send her to another school. Kids in high school can be really mean. When your kid finds where she fits in after being excluded and picked on and then that is taken away is detrimental to a teenager’s emotional health. Please help me.

I’m partial to the Leander comeback at BOA San Antonio and making finals, placing 10th overall, just a hair behind Cedar Park!  😍😍

I think maybe I'll start referring to this weekends competition as SGN - The Sorta Grand Nats

Having spent the weekend in Indianapolis for the first time, and also as someone who was a staunch supporter of a traveling Grand Nats, I've come to realize that there is absolutely 0 chance that GN comes to San Antonio.
The infrastructure at Lucas Oil Stadium is not just for football, but also absolutely designed for hosting 90 bands in a weekend. Practice halls (plural), all of them containing full sized indoor fields for groups to reserve and practice, halls for entire bands to relax, food, hotels, nothing at all like mess that is the Alamodome and surrounding SA.
Would it be cool? Absolutely. Will it ever happen? Never. Lucas Oil was designed for band, too. It's the perfect stadium.

I love Avon for making that trip down.
GNats is never going to move. Our only hope is to have BOA elevate th status of SASR. I very much doubt that happens.
    Is it fair? No.
    Does that matter? No.

As many know, I am associated with Vista Ridge. I am an alumni parent, all three of my kids went through the program. I have been involved at Vista for 11 years now and remain involved today.
I am horrified and embarrassed at any suggestion that our parents are saying anything to denigrate other programs, ESPECIALLY our sister schools. That is NOT the culture that I have been a part of for more than a decade now. The Ranger Band family has always been supportive of other bands just as much as our own kids. We cheer loud and long for other bands' performances and celebrate their successes, again, ESPECIALLY our sister schools. We go out of our way to offer help and support if we can and love to make friends along the way.
My hope is that the individuals involved in any of these unfortunate situations learn that what they have said is NOT the way we do things. My guess is that these comments are from folks less involved as volunteers and I would suggest strongly that they get more involved. Volunteering to work with and for our kids will open your eyes to understanding just how hard they work, just like the kids from all other schools.
On behalf of the Ranger Band family, I sincerely apologize for any and all of these unfortunate incidents. They are not representative of who we are.
And congratulations to Rouse on an amazing season! The Ranger Band family is happy for you and immensely proud of the honor you bring to LISD.

I’m from Frisco, and have been since the boom started here around 2001. When we moved here there was exactly ONE high school, so there has been NO ‘conversion’ of schools to make them smaller. I would kindly ask you to not spread misinformation about a situation you know nothing about. Frisco made a decision from the get-go that we wanted a ‘smaller’ school model, and we have continued to maintain that since the start. It gives our kids far more opportunities to participate in things, and there’s absolutely NOTHING whatsoever wrong with wanting that.

Frisco ISD isn’t the only school district with three high schools in finals. There is another school district that has fielded three bands in finals, and that district usually ends up sweeping the medals. Why are you focusing your ire at Frisco?? Why is there any ire at all for any program??

The numbers thing is also very much a chicken and egg sort of deal. It's tempting to just look at the numbers and conclude that having a bigger band helps you place better, but I think it goes deeper than that. A school/district that puts a strong emphasis on music, and backs that up with resources and quality instructors, will naturally draw more kids from the school's enrollment.
So, in effect, some of those bands are bigger BECAUSE they are good.
