  1. Itsjared can you please send prelim results to me as well. Thanks.
  2. I have a question about the judges/adjudicators as well. Is it the same panel for all 3 stages and do they just switch positions, or are they entirely new panels each time compromised of new judges...or is it somewhere in the middle where maybe a judge does one but maybe another does a couple stages, etc. Even though I was formerly in band I can't remember this aspect. Thanks, I was just curious.
  3. I am really hoping Leander will medal as a past Leander band member. I don't think there is any question they will dominate the AAA class again. I do think they are in contention and a dark horse for the Eagle. Avon is a lock for a medal in my opinion, this doesn't mean I think they are for sure the winners, it's just that I think they are the favorite and I can't imagine them being out of the top 3. If Leander can place ahead of the Texas contingent that they did in San Antonio they have a great shot. This would still mean they'd have to place above Carmel and Mason if Vandy maintains their edge. The reason I think Leander will medal and have an outside chance is the fact they should get very good GE scores. Obviously if they can win GE then that always bodes well. I think Avon and Leander will be the top two in GE. Leander probably won't win music, maybe an outside shot at visual but if their scoring margins are close to the other top groups in these captions that is where the GE will come into play. I think and I hope that the medalists are Avon, Vandegrift and Leander. Obviously Hebron, CTJ, Woodlands, Mason will have something to say about that as well. This is really very cliche to say but I think it might even be more true with this national finals than most in recent memory...I honestly think a lot of what happens in finals is going to come down to simply how well was that performance? I think any of the top 5-6 groups could be 1-6 merely based off of how that run goes for them because I'm sure the scoring will be quite close. Sometimes I think regardless of the strength of a run through it is implied that one group is superior to another but it may just very well be that whoever has the magic working that evening has the upper hand. It is interesting with this two week gap as a lot of significant movement can happen. We have seen big changes from Indy/SA to Grand Nats before in less time so that will be an interesting aspect this year to keep an eye on. I wish every group the best of luck and am hoping that Texas can take this down.
  4. Oh...my...God. I can’t wait to see where this ends up in 11 weeks. Toxic definitely has that DCI vibe going on. This is going to be something special. What I am seeing so far will have cross appeal between adjudicators and the crowd. I can only guess that some amazing rendition of 1812 will blow our socks off to conclude this show. I really like the direction this is going so far.
  5. Is there any video on Leander yet? I know they had the parent performance already but haven’t seen anything on YouTube. I know that sometimes this is intentional as well. I just wanted a little taste to whet my appetite. I don’t see a Grand Nats thread but my way too early predictions would be Carmel, Leander and a wild card medaling. I can’t see Carmel not medaling period, Leander is a legit/homer pick then the last spot would go to either teamtexas or Avon. With the absence of BA and TS this year tough to see anybody besides the Indiana duo and teamtexas being on the medal stand, perhaps Blue Springs? Maybe I’m leaving out somebody worth medal consideration, I’m not sure. I think Carmel is the only band standing in the way of Texas winning the eagle as I don’t think It is reasonable to think Avon would beat everybody from teamtexas. Assuming all 6 make finals (no offense to Round Rock but they are the only one I think isn’t a lock) with Avon & Carmel who are everyone’s picks for the remaining 4 spots based off of who you see attending? Again, don’t mean to offend. Just offering my fair assessment.
  6. That I saw in person, probably Plymouth Canton in 1999. Thought Crime: Music for an Orwellian Era. When I was at grand nats as a member of the Leander Band we were able to watch their pre-lims run in person. So sick! There were a lot of cool shows in the late 90's as it was a very experimental era. In a lot of ways the stuff that was being fielded then was more out there than what you see now, if anything it has actually been toned down a bit. There are exception to this like basically anything CTJ and Tarpon put on the field, but I remember when Spring and Churchill were at their prime and did some crazy stuff. Also Leonardo's Dream from FloMo a few years back might be the second best I've seen live. For anybody that has never seen 1999 Plymouth Canton please YouTube it. You will get chills in the finale as everything comes together amazingly. The guard is like a machine, the music just jaw-dropping and emotional, the GE is delivered correctly and there is no confusion as to what is going on. The show still holds up really well today. I will comment more later if I think of anything.
  7. LeanderMomma, I am a Leander band alum from way back so I am a little bias, however everything I stated I do feel as truth. I feel looking at them this year the execution from a musical and visual standpoint is the best I've seen since this great resurgance. Really all the pieces are there, which is why I harp on the show itself, design, and how the GE transpires from it. They have phenomenal people doing this and they have a great formula, we will just have to see what direction they take with it. I know I am super excited. I plan to go to Indy myself next year. I wanted to in 2016, but it will be more feasible for me this go around.
  8. This is a very interesting topic. I think Leander has the formula to challenge for the Eagle next year. Their guard is phenomenal as was showcased winning that second highest WGI class last year. Their score was so good they could have challenged for the win at the top level. Beyond that Leander has shown they can play with Vandy, Hebron, FloMo, CTJ, etc. Not even counting the 3A captions sweeps they won music in Austin this year, and have won it a time or two before at a regional in the last few years when perhaps they were not expected to. I think what also helps, although it is silly that it does, is politics. What is key is this will be the first time that Leander has gone to Grand Nats fairly quickly after a previous trip. They only went in 1999 and then in 2016. They are not a mainstay, although I think they will be now. I just always had this feeling even if they were capable that judging wasn't going to allow 'some Texas band that hadn't been to Indy in 17 years' to do that. Perhaps I am a little off key here, I just think there is something to it. They also have the recipe in design, and here is hoping they find just the right mix to bring to Indy next year. I enjoyed Fourth Dimension in 2016, although if I could be a little critical, I am not ever quite sure it communicated all that it needed to from a GE standpoint. To me Choral Works in 2015 did this the best. I loved Polarity, but if I had one critical comment there it would be for lack of delivering much emotion. To better illustrate my point Vista Ridge really grabbed people's hearts this year with their show. I don't think it was a GE monster or even overly visually stunning, but it just had this it factor and it was done well and it kind of had that let's get on our feet the last 30 seconds, throw babies on the field reception. If you notice with Avon and Carmel for some reason their design as it parallels with the music is astonishing. They are not always even shows that make you go crazy, but I think that is what sets them apart some times. It is the only thing I can think of really because Texas can play with them and execute with them, but I do think there is this missing variable and it is hard for me to put into words. Bands should definitely feel that they don't need to be over the top to win. Just note how Tarpon finished 5th with RP1, etc. I don't think it hurts by any means, and you want to bring the excitement to Indy, but it very may well be that finding the perfect design, selling that design as it conveys the music, etc. and doing it clean is the magic recipe. I'd be interested in hearing some more thoughts on this.
  9. My heart says Leander first, but I’m thinking first or second. Not sure CTJ can be beaten tonight. Thoughts?
  10. Wow, that would be so weak. Rumored time to start back up?
  11. I actually suspect they’ll get the entire competition in. Finals might be delayed a bit but I don’t think we’re looking at such a delay that finals will be called off. That’s assuming no additional weather comes in after this pass through. Just my two cents.
  12. I know Leander did an entire run through yesterday.
  13. Wow, that's crazy and unfortunate for all involved. Thanks for the information, I had no idea.
  14. Leander fan and general band fan here in general... My question for the masses is what happened to William Mason this year? They had improved every year and medaled at Nationals last year and I haven't seen them on HornRank top 30 at all?! That seems like a massive drop...maybe something I'm missing? Director change? Just an off year? Can somebody fill me in as to why this might be? Thanks. I was just curious.
  15. Anybody catch any word on prelims scores? I know that's usually kept pretty secret but I've seen where that information sometimes gets out. Wonder who is in better position heading into finals, Leander or CTJ?
  16. I really don't understand some of this scoring and im not trying to be bitter. It looks like Leander's separation from other top contenders in finals was a much lower GE score. So musically and visually they stood up well but got outscored a lot there? I guess if anything I would've believed the opposite. Avon and Carmel scores very high as well when despite a great field I didn't see that there was any one band that deserved that high. Congratulations to all bands I'm just kind of miffed about a lot of these top 6 placements and scores. Too many to list them all really and too tired to do so. I feel for Avon, that's a tough way to go down...
  17. Thoughts on Leander's performance? I didn't see any major issues but I didn't see the prelims or semis run...
  18. How would you know this placement info for Bowie for instance? Is there something you can infer from semifinals draw? Please explain...
  19. Question...will preliminary scores/rankings for today be released this evening or do we have to wait until tomorrow night to see both days? I know in a way even though they both are in place to create semifinals and finals they are kind of viewed as different competitions to themselves so I thought there was a chance that may be shown this evening, can anybody answer this? Would just be fun to see some information thus far...
  20. Correct. I think the reasons for this are twofold, or at least I like to think so. Although it is not visually pleasing and does in a way 'detract' from the show, I think it is usually acknowledged more of an anamoly, or a random freak thing than it is a 'mistake'. A lot of times the littlest thing can cause this and yet a major gaff may not even result in one. Secondly, I think it may be an unwritten thing in terms of protecting the esteem of students. I give you this scenario...band A places 2nd place in some major competition behind another band 'B' by a slim margin. In all likelihood this student may forever feel as if he cost his band something, almost like a place kicker that misses a potential game-winning field goal if I can draw a comparison. Although this potentially could still be the case the rules are not clear on it and out of respect I don't think most adjudicators do much there...the UIL even notes that a mistake such as that (if corrected immediately etc. etc.) it is hardly an issue. I remember the UIL wording on it a bit.
  21. Also to me it seems like the Indy super was graded on a higher curve of scoring than SA. Avon for instance scores over a 94 and yet Flower Mound only a 93. Now granted, obviously they're not being compared at the same competition...just felt the SA scores were 'low'. A 93 for FloMo was low to win, a 90something for Leander is 'low' for that performance. The Indy scoring makes more sense because things won't change much in a week and yet watch... the Texas bands like Leander will magically inflate to at least a 95 or something. You definitely can't cross examine the scores of these two comps today. I say Leander, Avon and Tarpon Springs are your medalists if I had to guess right now. Right
  22. Medal? They can win the Eagle. Tell me one band you know for sure would be ahead of them? I don't mean that in a snarky way, just a way of saying they have as good of a chance if not better than any of the other bands...I'm a homer but if they finish a strong second here with a good cushion between them and any other Texas band I would almost think they WOULD. They can beat Tarpon, Avon, Carmel, Mason. Absolutely.
  23. I've never wanted to see a prelim recap so bad in my life... I guess it goes without saying if anybody gets this information they'll share it?
  24. LKendrick, when you say you think Leander is a clear second are you taking into account what you've seen today or the entire field from both days? Just curious.
