  1. It doesn't matter. All judges gave Katy a top 5 score. Greg Dick is a highly accomplished band director and he certainly did not graduate from Katy High School.
  2. I am a bit confused by some of the statements on this forum. 1. Bridgeland High School - several people have commented saying how they were surprised Bridgeland did not make finals. At BOA Houston, Bridgeland lost to Tompkins (14th place), Katy (18th place), and Cinco Ranch (20th place). Yet, Bridgeland was supposed to make finals, or even qualify for state over these schools?! That does not follow logic. 2. Katy High School - people are being quite rude about this school, even going so far as to make up rumors about the judges. But if you look at the scores, Katy was the only school that every judge gave a top 5 score to. I believe if there was bias, it would show up more in results like (9 8 1 8 8) - where you can clearly see the judge who was biased. The judges did not agree on much, but they agreed that Katy was deserving of making state. If you claim bias, then you have to claim that all 5 judges were biased toward Katy, which is just not true. They had a great performance, chill out. 3. Cypress Falls - lot of people cannot believe how Cypress Falls did not advance, considering they qualified in '14 and '16. Are they aware Cypress Falls is under different leadership? It takes time to adjust to to these things. I liked their show, but they did not have the cleanest performance. They'll be back, I know it.
  3. While I would not have chosen Katy or Jersey Village to be 1st and 2nd place, I believe they are both deserving of advancing. Katy was clean! The ballad was especially well-played, with very nice shaping to the phrases. Also, their individual marching technique was great - this is something I did not see in the lower bands. Jersey Village - incredible ensemble sound! They had a convincing performance. So happy for both of these groups! I personally would have placed: 1. Taylor 2. Cy-Fair 3. Seven Lakes I felt bad for Langham Creek- an unfortunate mishap with the trumpet mic. I truly think they would have had a great shot of making it. Love the direction they are taking their color guard and overall design! I agree with the placement of Cy-Falls. Brass was definitely over-blowing and the marching forms were not always there. I think they are transitioning - in a few years, they will be back on top. They have great leadership. It is easy to criticize the judging in this area, but this is a highly evolving area, and new bands are emerging and defining themselves. Let's not be quick to dismiss their accomplishments, simply because they are not what we expected. Congrats to all finalists and state qualifiers!
  4. I'm sorry, but I never said I hope they do not earn a finals spot. I said "I hope they are not guaranteed a spot". That is completely different. I supported my case using examples from other marching shows this year and my own feelings upon hearing their performance live. BOA is an organization riddled with politics. If there is a category titled GE, then it should be assessed accurately across the board. I am an extremely positive person, but I am also a frustrated one as well. Cedar Park's show this year is a musical triumph, no doubt. But I wouldn't call it spectacular, and honestly, their color guard is weak. In the end, though, my frustration is not with the program, it is with the judging. Cedar Park is a wonderful band (I mean, they just won honor band...duh) that is free to make its own artistic choices. But come time of the performance, it deserves to be judged fairly for those choices. I get that there are people that love watching them march so precisely and play great music. There is no question they excel at what they do. But is that what BOA is about? I sat somewhat close to a judge at BOA Conroe, and overheard him talking so heatedly about the specific choice of arm movement during one visual of Hebron's show. My point is that I do not see much creative or visual energy about Cedar Park's show, yet they will still beat a ton of other bands at BOA San Antonio. Yes, I could have said it in my first post a little nicer, but I was not untruthful. And by the way, there are much more disrespectful things I could have said than "I will shake my head".
  5. If Cedar Park makes finals, I will have to shake my head........ The show is pretty boring overall. The music is played well, but the show is horribly drained of creativity. I know they only have 10 color guard members, but I am annoyed that they still receive such high scores at a BOA competition - where bands are judged on the total effect of their performance, not just music and marching. When other bands are rearranging white rectangles, using railroad crossings, swinging on swing sets, and using acrobatic performers, it shows you just how far the world of marching band has become. It is truly an art form. Tossing a couple of flags every now and then and having some people jump of a staircase is a pretty cheap attempt at expressing the artfulness of music like Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet". I hope they are not guaranteed a spot, like many of you have predicted, simply because of their name. Cedar Ridge outshines them for sure.
