It’s not a rampant problem by any means but you’d be surprised.

Cedar park vs Leander is probably bigger than CP vs Rouse which is relatively new. The CP/Leander rivalry  has been around since the mid 2000’s.

these days I’m not sure rivalry is the right word though, lots of positivity and support in the competitiveness of LISD these days

This is missing Cedar Park with a 90.65 at BOA SA.

Another strange thing to think about
That’s not far from how the honor band taping process works…with human judges of course.

imagine a future where you have to upload the score and drill book into a contest computer and it judges your accuracy and spacing down to the inches.

Yes of course. I was just making a comparison that I thought people could more easily identify with as far as how different people see different things, even when ranking bands. I guess ideally we would just let a computer do it and remove the human factors completely.

Now wouldn’t that be something for a “band nerd” to set up… an Ai computer given the data points of the scoring for UIL, and Boa sheets, and then have the computer AI watch videos of all the bands and see where they would score and have them ranked…
    off season project…
and we would probably still have disagreements about the results.

Leander going  from 1st in brass in pre lims to 7th in finals is a pretty crazy swing.

I think this is a very common misconception when it comes to a lot of these bands. I don't know a single school district that gives their bands a full budget to fund the entire show. Leander raised over 100,000 dollars through their March-a-thon fundraiser and every last dollar was spent on the show. Transportation, food, contest registration, props, drill, music, etc. These bands work extremely hard on and off the field to make everything happen.

Exactly, School districts don't just hand the band program a mountain of cash and say "now go win state!"

The Woodlands are incredible all the way around but the guard is actually something else entirely.
    Absolutely INSANE ensemble timing.

Agreed- groups that ranked above certain others in both prelims and finals at BOASA still ended up ranked below them. Hornrank I think started with the hope of ranking schools based on BOA performance and achievement, but it is evident that the rankings are established not on performance, but rather prestige. In addition, while admirable to try and rank all the schools, the competition is SOOOOOO tight that an unranked school could easily hang with the likes of someone ranked mid-teens. Anyway, I’m unsure if there’s a solution that could even be implemented (if the Hornrank folks even had interest in mending their system.) At the end of the day, these are all child performers pouring their hearts into making something on the field. As long as they inspire just one person, that’s a total win.

Thanks for the kind words... I haven't been back to the SMBC since 2015 since Alamodome started cracking down on spectators bring in recording equipment such as the simple digital camcorder and external audio recorder.

That year, I had my tripod confiscated but luckily had a small Gorillapod tucked away in my backpack... this was before Alamodome banned regular backpacks from being brought into the stadium.

I perched myself into the camera-well high above the crowd along the 50 yard line at the top of the Alamodome.

With how many bands performed in a block and how far away the concessions and restrooms were, it was difficult being a one-man operation. My brother was unable to join me in watching the bands that year.

That's why I only did prelims because I was so exhausted.

I do not think there is any way one could record the entire contest today.

For now, I am content just going back to my home region (10) and recording/posting all the marching bands from there.
