i calls them likes i sees them. been doin this too long to care about history or anybody else's opinion for that matter LOL.
both shows are interesting and effective but arcadia overall has the clearer and more aesthetically appealing staging design, even if thematically it's kinda whatever. Carmel is cleaner atm. both have fairly persistent timing issues upstairs but arcadia has more of them + a higher proportion of obvious errors like drops. nevertheless i suspect design elements will put arcadia on top as long as they can narrow the performance gap a little bit in 3 weeks. obvious split in the captions at their recent contest b/w the what/how. easy to see why.

@packwick Bold prediction not including Carmel in the top 3 for Scholastic World. They haven't missed the podium since 2009. 🤯
That said, re-watching the most recent videos, I think Arcadia makes a suitable "replacement." The staging and choreography are both very Carmel-like, for obvious reasons. Of course, there's a decent possibility that BOTH Arcadia and Carmel medal over The Woodlands, which would honestly shock me, given the record-setting breadth of talent in TWHS, not to mention the sheer emotional impact of the show, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been shocked by WGI. Not even close. 😂 And that doesn't even include Tarpon, who's going into the competition seeded in 3rd. Now that I think about, I'm not sure what my exact top 3 would be, which is part of the excitement of this class. It's very competitive, besides the very top. I am, of course, partial to Fishers, but they didn't really score like a future medalist at Mideast.
Anyway, I think the prelims schedule is great, because it's going to give us several direct comparisons. Arcadia and Carmel in block two (plus Fishers just a couple after) and then Avon and The Woodlands closing out block three. Tarpon will be on their own island in the first block probably, but they'll get a better comparison in semifinals.

yaaayy Marcus!! they're really going!! cmoooon gold!! fly fly fly! any medal will be nice for sure. C-ville may be hard to top but theyre not as Teflon as they first seemed, if mideast is accurate.
woodlands should be good even for 2nd as long as they can keep w/in 3 pts of Avon lol. crazy that that's the standard this yr. for the record my top two are still avon/woodlands. rarely change my mind unless a unit doesnt improve like normal or looks like it has been entirely replaced by a new and much better guard lol.
arcadia will likely make inroads in DA and the vocab half of IA (amazing designers, solid performers), but Avon/woodlands are the two that have the strongest doses of all 3 of the GE holy trinity of emotional, intellectual, and aesthetic effect. however still need to see woodlands from a proper upstairs angle, miiiight not get it until Dayton.
grand oaks, 'nother cisd guard, wut wut! lol. kinda buried in the schedule as is normal w/ A class. Oaks is fab, should put up a decent fight for a medal, hopefully they've been working on the staging, think that'll be the biggest hurdle to the podium. love the aesthetic. skills of the performers are prob pretty close to gold medal level.
ofc also hoping all 4 of Westlake, Bowie, azle, and flomo make finals.

That U of M show was just phenomenal to watch. OSU as well, but I really loved Dream On!

LOL these college dance routines are pitched at such a furious pace. they're really trying to cram in as many skills as possible, rack up those points. also everything is articulated with a sledgehammer. technically impressive but makes me appreciate the wider dynamic range of winter guards, tho their skills are much more basic.
also, also!, funnnny seeing Travis Wall mentioned in the comments as the choreographer for OSU, isn't he canceled for grooming a student or something? making his comeback in the college scene lol. now's wgi's chance to get him on the cheap!! just only have him work with girls!!!
he's no Kenneth MacMillan in terms of talent but who is??? gosh im getting excited for ballet again. i can't wait to see Mayerling in May!!!

Thank you, again, @Tubalord11, for your commentary!
I've been violently ill all day. I wonder if it's COVID. I couldn't watch the Flo streams without feeling a bit of motion sickness. 😭🤢 I got about three into the A Class. I'm happy to see everyone did well.
    It's me, isn't it? I'm "some others." 😂

    The Goddess of Guard.
Truly, it's crazy to me that the biggest and best color guard program in the country, consisting of something like 200 students, is taught by only two full-time staff members, and that the director mostly designs and choreographs all FIVE competitive indoor shows herself -- even crazier when you take into account how dominant all 5 guards are. The two at the junior high level are undefeated (again) this season, with the varsity guard only clearly surpassed in talent by PDCMS's varsity (2-year program versus 3-year program). Meanwhile, all 3 guards at the high school level scored above an 85 the weekend of WGI Austin -- rarefied territory for the very beginning of March -- and are either obviously the best in the state in their respective classes, or very close to it.
Unheard of. But then so was taking a non-finalist A guard to World class in less than two seasons right after being hired.
Robbins is a VERY rare talent. And yet I still firmly believe that every guard everywhere would benefit from implementing similar changes to their feeder programs, like she did in 2019. You don't have to be a genius to reap the benefits of that.

arcadia is still trending higher than both of them!! didn't realize they had another contest today, they've been very active in wgi this season.
obvious Gaines/Queen involvement, some stuff ive seen from those two before.
actually hate that i can easily discern the designers like this, i consider it a judgment clouder. as a "sport" it should be more about the athletes on the floor. honestly doesn't always seem like it. last yr's result at the top of SW left a wee bit o' bad taste in my mouth. and im FAR from a tarpon fanboy.

Avon with a 93.7 in prelims, which is massive, although at least a little more reasonable with 3 weeks left to go before they score nearly a 100 at Dayton. 😂
The only big issue I have with the SW results is the 87 to 89 gap between Fishers and Carmel. Much too large. Fishers is right up there with Carmel, and maybe even better.
Besides that, the results look fine. Nice to see Bellbrook improve. They have some fans here. 👍

I mean Carmel was wonderful, but the performers impress me more than the show itself. I do appreciate the more intellectual approach to design. We don't see it as often. Actually, the most moving parts of the show come from piecing together the theme with what they do with the fabric (river of time) on the floor.

Bellbrook had the run I thought this show had in it early on.  I think they can make some moves.

Kiski Area-WOW! Rifle work was just insane, both in difficulty and how clean it was! Such smart design choices using the rotating props to set up their soloist for some challenging tosses that they nailed! Flag work was also so good, big moments at the end where so tight, these SW groups are blowing my mind!
Nothing but clean work from Bellbrook! Great job of conveying the theme throughout, love how they make different forms of circles to illustrate tires in the car-themed show. Plenty of variation of equipment work, super clean, loved everything about it!
Carmel could possibly, Maybe be closer to Avon than I might think, bc other than a couple drops, that was flawless! I will admit, it does feel somewhat repetitive, and that the performance is to long at times, I think it's because there really aren't any changes in the pace, but the demand and execution is very high! Love the rifle work in this one a ton, super exposed, plenty of GE, will be interesting to see how they score, but that was fantastic!

Top six in Scholastic World Finals will definitely be “Must Watch TV” (or even better if you can be in UD Arena!).

their placement and score at Avon were already pretty twilight zone-ish honestly, at least as an upstairs judge.
id have Fishers over Carmel, upstairs-wise.

Avon was spectacular. Super clean, elegant, wonderful staging. They also move significantly better than any guard in the class, and blend that movement so well with the equipment. No, they don't have TWHS' top to bottom equipment talent, but the designers know how to MAXIMIZE what they do have.
Fishers was also stellar. I could easily see them medaling at Dayton. Lovelier than you might expect from a baseball show. I also wasn't expecting them to be this strong after watching their marching show. Such a pleasant surprise!
Yeah, folks, the top of the SW class is where it's at this year.

Those Open class scores at Mideast are definitely lower at the top than I would have guessed. Centerville and Noblesville are only a point higher than they were over a month ago at the Avon regional. I just watched Centerville and saw they gave a very strong performance. Judges might be pumping the brakes a little bit on the inflated scores. (Of course, I say that now, before Avon pops a 96 or something with three weeks to go.)
Tarpon hitting a 90 in prelims is great. There was roughly the same gap between them and Warren Central as there was (over a month ago) at Avon between Fishers/Carmel, which seems like an improvement. They were scoring behind both of those guards, plus TWHS.

The Stuart, FL one-day regional Tarpon is attending instead actually has the more competitive SW lineup, with West Broward, Stoneman Douglas, and Warren Central (!) among others. I think the competition could help push Tarpon's score higher than if they went to the Southeast regional. I'm assuming they'll win the regional, which seems likely.

I do have a good amount of work this weekend but I'' definitely be tunning in for the world class guards in the Mideast both days, may just have it on in the background throughout the day idk yet but I'll definitely be tuning in for the world class guards at Mideast, can't wait to see those Indiana guards, wondering what Avon is gonna score lol
Wishing Tarpon was going to Southeast, would be nice to see how they score against the other SW guards on the same day, wonder why they aren't...

The Mideast and Southeast Power Regionals will be streamed on Flo starting tomorrow! Lots and lots of great winter guards. The upper classes will be especially strong. The Mideast one is practically a World Championships Finals preview in Scholastic World -- something like 9 out of the 10 units have a strong chance at making finals. Only what, two to three weeks left before the end of the season?
