  1. Fun fact: On this day 23 years ago was the 4A (2nd largest classification at the time) state marching contest where Coppell placed first and Keller placed 2nd. Great to see them fighting strong all these years later with some ups and downs along the way. Fossil Ridge also placed 4th! Only a couple years after opening. Keller Central and Timber Creek didn’t exist yet. November 1st is also officially Keller High School Marching Band Day in the City of Keller.

That day in 1999 Keller was the second band to take the field. At 7:15 am they set the high bar for preliminary competition and finished first. (So much for early runs being a problem.) I don’t remember Coppell’s preliminary performance time but I do remember they finished seventh in preliminary competition. Southlake Carrol, Fossil Ridge, and Colleyville Heritage were all in the mix. If I remember correctly, Grapevine was too. After an excruciating delay while the judges looked up the rules for breaking a three way tie in the middle of the pack the Finals announcements could begin. When they announced third place and Coppell’s name still hadn’t been called the atmosphere was electric. Then second place was announced and the Coppell Drum Major began to step forward before realizing it was Keller who had finished second. There was a brief silence and then the Coppell parents exploded in celebration. The irony of that day was that Keller‘s Director had written Coppell’s drill. In retrospect it was a masterpiece that perfectly highlighted the transitory nature of the period. Core style drill was becoming popular in UIL competition but still faced some resistance as it was replacing military style drill. Coppell’s drill that year blended the two styles masterfully. Mr. McGahey doesn’t write drill for the competition anymore. 😏

  4. Unfortunately that stadium is AWFUL for acoustics. As someone who has been to SA and GN in the same year, keep it in Lucas Oil.

  5. I think BOA should just move Grand Nationals to Dallas! I know it will never happen but I can't let my dream die. Lets see how well those Indy bands do when stacked up with all of Texas' finest!

  6. You should unnecessarily spiteful to other groups. Smile and be happy for the bands that make finals, continue to support and push the bands who didn’t forwards. No need for this “These bands didn’t deserve to make it” talk. Contrary to what you’re saying it not only does little to uplift the band you think should’ve made it in, but it also hurts the bands who did. I’m very tired of seeing this.

That would be cool but it seems the consensus is that people don’t like the acoustics. I’ve performed in the AT&T stadium before and I loved how big it was cuz I have a thing for large crowds in large stadiums😩🤣

  8. I've seen so many references to Vista Ridge/Vandegrift at Area vs State last year as if it's almost a given that the same thing will happen this year. Two points: 1 - Vista beat Vandy at Area in 2018 as well, also after finishing behind them at BOA Austin. We know how that year turned out. 2 - Vista's show this year is much stronger than last year. I think that it pretty clear. I'm not making any promises as to what will happen, that Vista will beat Vandy at either BOASA or State. But I am saying that they are a good horse to bet on to surpass most people's expectations.

I would hardly use area scores as an indicator for SA. Just last season Vista Ridge beat Vandegrift at area and then they swapped at San Antonio. Same with a few bands last year swapping placements. It happens. Area is kind of weird and wonky all the time.

I think North Lamar Sulphur springs and Lumberton all have a good shot at finishing high. Lumberton had 2 judges place them 1st in finals. Had an outlier judge bring their overall ranking down.

Gonna go crazy and post a probably inaccurate prediction lol hebron vandy marcus reagan flo mo ctj cedar ridge vista ridge woodlands coppell waxahachie round rock ld bell pearland like I said, I don’t expect this to be right (knowing UIL) I think pearland and Ld Bell will make it solely because of content and design as well as visual proficiency. Bell’s drums as wells as winds scores will probably not look too great but their color guard, visual and ge scores will be pretty good I think. I think Waxahachie could place better than where i’ve put them, they were very good at area and their show has grown on me quite a lot. Woodlands is a wild card for me, they haven’t been to the state contest since they’ve switched over to their jazzy style so I’m not sure how much the uil judges will like it. (Last year was a banger tho) Their director change has also seemed to do a number on them. Oh well, I still look forward to seeing them tbh! Vista ridge is also a wild card for me, they did this thing, this thing where they won area over vandegrift. But the thing is, they did this last year and when we got to state vandy beat them by almost 10 places. I know this years band and show is much better which is why I have them higher then last year but who knows. This show is dangerous, it’s very well put together and I could very well see it doing better. Im not sure if Marcus will medal this year but knowing their past reputation with UIL i’ve got ‘em in 3rd. I don’t think their show this year is as good put together as last year and has rather bland and dull moments, but that brass can PLAY. Ok, and we know Hebron wins nothing else to add lol Now about the bubble, KINDA forgot to post about the bubble I watched dripping springs area finals run and they are CLEAN I will not be surprised if they place just right outside of finals or even snatching a bottom spot. I’ve heard good things about Wylie this year and they placed well at area so I could see them being just right on the outside. Same with Wylie East, a 5a last year and now a 6a. Still qualified for state no problem however. They were pretty freakin good at prosper. Timber creek, oh man you talk about a program that has grown in skill. With Highland park’s former director they played really in the uil circuit at area this year with their 3rd place finish. As a bell alum and someone that’s competed against them numerous times, i’m real proud of that program for rising as much as they have. Duncanville has also got some potential in their show, but also a lot of dirt. They’ve got a killer show and just such a great sound tho. I could see them placing anywhere from outside of finals or maybe even lower than that i’m not sure however. Westlake is having their best year I think in the school’s history. I won’t be surprised if they make it with relative ease and I won’t be surprised if they miss at the same time. Their show is killer and they’ve got a great sound. Hopefully they’ve grown a lot since I saw them at prosper. Keller, I don’t even know what to say about them tbh. I really did not think they were all that great at area, they’re struggling much more this time of year than years past. However the judges at area seemed to really like them so I won’t be surprised if they can snatch a spot here as well. This year will be my first year attending state as a spectator so i’m really excited to see how it all plays out!

You’re entitled to your opinion. I’m entitled to mine. Yours is informed by no better evidence than mine is. But I will say that there is evidence. We will agree to disagree. I will say also that I have heard, with my own ears, directors communicating that the phenomena does occur. I’ve heard judges say it does occur. It’s theoretical impossible for it NOT to occur. (And if you would like to get into that erudition - we can take this outside of this forum) So it’s not just my opinion. If you reread my original post, I don’t quibble with it. Your esoteric explanation really dances around the key word- it’s subjective. Just like gymnastics and ice skating - and therefore it uses criterion that aren’t objective. Like reputation. Boxing. Same thing. my point is that when you see teams and people begin to overcome that - it’s far more than just perfunctory. That’s the whole point. Period. Full stop. And that’s irrefutable.

  16. Final predictions and thoughts on what will be a very competitive super regional: 1. Hebron (M/GE) This is probably the only band I'm fairly confident in placing where I have them. Hebron has somehow raised the level for them in terms of demand both musically and visually and are putting out some absolutely insane sounds. The brass is inexplicably incredible and visually they're nailing some very difficult drill sets. No one in the country can play as good as them and I think they will repeat here and at UIL State. 2. Vandegrift It hurts me slightly to predict Vandegrift here as it would be three years in a row they place 2nd. That said, they've got another great show with some super cool music from Tron. While I prefer Juliet Letters, I really like that they're also pushing the envelope in demand and think they're doing a good job with it. They may have lost to Vista Ridge at area but I think they'll bounce back and at least grab a medal here. 3. Ronald Reagan (V) I think Reagan's show this year is a better version of what they had last year. Visually they have some really nice drill moves and I think they may have my favorite preshow of the season. They still sound excellent, especially the brass (great trombone soloists), and their color guard/dance team is phenomenal. 4. Cedar Ridge So happy to see them follow up on their fantastic season last year with an even better one! The things they're doing with an ensemble half the size of some bands here is super impressive. The brass is incredible and the percussion is top tier as always. Love this show. 5. Claudia Taylor Johnson For a show that's a little more lowkey they've still got a crazy amount of demand in their music and drill and are pulling it off. The ballad has grown on me over the season to be one of my favorites, and I think the preshow is super creative and very cool. It's not as cohesive as some of their past shows, but I still enjoy it very much. 6. Flower Mound Probably the most creative show concept I've seen anywhere this season. The artwork is super creative and well done and I love their uniforms to match it. It's not my favorite FM show, I think the drill is a little meh at certain points, but at the same time there are some moments like the ending that really blow my mind. Musically they are outstanding of course. 7. Vista Ridge There are few bands that can make me raise my eyebrows and think wow when I hear a full ensemble moment and Vista Ridge is one of them. They sound so incredible in those moments, especially the ending of their show. After watching their area performance there are a couple of timing miscues here and there, but nothing that can't be easily fixed. I'm a fan! 8. Marcus While their show is not as difficult as some other bands here, they are still remarkably clean. Visually there are some really cool moments like the pivot in the beginning set. The orchestral sound they produce is iconic and I'm expecting to see some very high performance captions. 9. Coppell Love to see them continuing their upward trajectory after a breakout season last year! They might have my favorite ballad of the season with a beautiful sax soloist. While I'm not as sold on the closer as their opener/ballad, I give them props for putting Beethoven in Havana on the field as I don't think I've ever seen that before. Really great show! 10. Cedar Park Really impressive to see them field such a massive group yet still sound very balanced and clean. Their ballad is a highlight of the season and I'm not at all surprised to see them win Waco so convincingly. There are a few moments in the drill that are a little dirty for me, but I think they are solidly in finals. 11. The Woodlands Director changes can be hard to weather, especially when you lose multiple directors, but the Woodlands are still very strong this year! The show is a little reminiscent of last year and isn't quite as heavy-hitting, but they still produce excellent sounds and their soloists are just as good as ever. 12. Round Rock It's great to see Round Rock bounce back from what was probably a disappointing season last year. Visually I think the design is much stronger than many of their recent shows, and they still sound as good as they always have. They're definitely towards the upper end of the finals bubble and I expect to see them in finals. 13. Westlake They've got a really creative show this year! I think they hit the mark on the noir theming of the show. Their clarinet soloist is really quite spectacular and the ensemble sounds excellent. Really awesome show concept and a definite crowd-pleaser. 14. Cy-Fair I would love to see them cap off their outstanding season so far with a finals appearance here! Really fantastic sounds from their brass and the uniforms make for some pretty cool visual moments when they turn around. The percussion is also very impressive and the woodwinds do a great job with their runs. Great trumpet soloist too! In the bubble: Keller, Leander, Rouse, James Bowie, Pearland, LD Bell, Timber Creek, Waxahachie, Seven Lakes, Klein Oak, Westwood, Lake Travis, Hendrickson, a dozen other bands I've forgotten. Seriously, the finals bubble is just massive. Of the bands I have listed I think any of the top 11 bands I have down could get into the top half. Any of the bands I have listed in the bubble could also get into finals and wouldn't surprise me. This contest is just ridiculously competitive.

Howdy I agree that one judge didn’t care for their program. It’s a shame that one judge basically pulled them down from 2nd to 4th. I think they were the crowd favorite for sure.

  21. i'm catching up on area vids. great work, kiddos! first of all, ummm, COPPELL! holy cow! huge, rich sounds. loving the super groovy recap of Beethoven at the end. so rhythmically challenging. guard is large and in charge. is that opening flute from Atonement? i heard Atonement mentioned + the typewriter sounds and got super excited. brilliant novel, brilliant film. music a little muddy after opener, but sooo cool. still love FM's concept more than probably any other this year. super duper meta. super duper band. capes are tasteful and don't overwhelm the visual upstairs *cough*Broken Arrow*cough*. the skeleton of the design not my favorite from them, by that i mean just the pure drill and music, but it's still super impressive. some big big moments and big big sounds. some tuning issues here and there also, wondering how cold it was. twhs i couldn't be more proud of. super improvement. i've been around a long time now and know that a lot of bands don't weather major staff changes very well. so thank u, new directors, for stepping into the pressure cooker and managing it well, and to the kids who stuck w/ the program and kept it going strong. i'm so happy for them. they could honestly get 14th place here and i'd be thrilled. Vista Ridge. this show is such a fascination. i've professed my love for it a lot already. aggressive, intelligent, strange, always engaging. BLAZINGLY difficult, this is what u get when u don't water down a Vanderkolff drill program. performance nooot quite there imo, maybe in another week, and the guard is too small for the band, but it excites me so much i don't really care. honestly not the fairest comparison b/w vista's guard and vandy's dance team. like, honestly, i'm not going to tell as much upstairs if u lose your balance on a chaines turn, but i'm sure as f*** gonna notice if flags are going up and down at different times and rifles are dropped. waaay more exposed, waaay bigger risk. a little surprised Vandy didn't come out on top at area. maybe only a little weaker than usual, usual being like top 3 SA. i will say this, the "experimental marching" was a liiittle oversold. hahaha. it's the same Vandy visual, but w/ glow sticks. hahaha. now the music is different. more contemporary. that change is good. is the grid some sort of Matrix thing? what i love most about Cedar Ridge is i guess the clarity. i never don't know what they're going for. i really like the depth to the set, the shadowing. the character moments. the percussion. show makes perfect sense. pretty strong musically at area this past weekend. visual is simple and pretty clean. maybe i'm not connecting w/ it as much as the others bc it's a little too simple for my tastes. but they can surely execute. will look for others later. great great job everyone. can't wait for those fancy schmancy ~*inDOoR~* performances.

just wanted to hop on and say congratulations to our state qualifiers and just all the bands who competed here! these young kids have worked hard all season long to get to this point, and while not everyone may get the results they wanted or wished for, all of these kids are winners and should be proud of all they hard work they've put in! Really happy for Timber Creek! After seeing them live this year at dfw, I knew this show was going to be something special by the time they get to area, and boy was I right! One of my suitemates and best friends at college went there, so now I have some bias, but I mean wow, what a day it must have been for those kids! That opening hit just gets me every time! 24. District 11 needs to move out of this Area and go back to where there were in the early 2000s. It’s sad that these kids work so hard but can’t advance since all of district 32 wins state. They’d advance in half of the other area competitions. Not sure what the difference is with the Austin schools. It’s decided by judges so perception is a key factor. They just assume they are better now and get the benefit of the doubt.

  29. I'm a relatively new band parent. My kid's band had a great run last year and I learned a lot. I did deep dives into how judges score performances, the differences between BoA and UIL etc. I know what *I* like, and I'm curious to understand what makes a show "good" and if there are different strategies directors employ to woo judges. I saw A LOT of great marching bands last year and so far this year. I played music as a kid, but I never marched. To be clear, I am not dogging on any of these bands and I am not trying to insinuate anyone is overrated, but I want to "get it." I know these kids don't get any say in their show design and they just march the drill and play the music they're given and they are all hardworking musicians and athletes. 1. Something I noticed last year, and I've seen some of this year so far is that some larger bands seem to really "clutter" the field with props and other things. (i.e. Bowie's show this year, Dripping Springs last year, the school with the Papyrus show last year, Leander last year with the bus). Hopefully that illustrates what I am talking about. Is credit given by judges for how much space a band takes up on the field? 2. Do big bands automatically have an advantage? Vandegrift was amazing last year, don't get me wrong, but with all of the hype I thought I'd be completely blown out of the water...and I was, they were loud and they sounded great...but I didn't think their show was particularly special...but again, I don't know exactly what makes a show "special." 3. Themes - so obviously the goal is to tell a story, but some of the themes are just strange to me. See Papyrus noted above. It was the "story of paper." The band sounded great, the visuals were nice, but I wasn't necessarily entertained by the "story." Paper? On the other hand Hendrickson's show was energetic and entertaining and sounded great, but there didn't seem to be a cohesive story/theme. It also fell flat for me. Is this just the result of different styles and preferences? 4. Props - so what I was told by experienced band parents last year was that it is all about props, even more so with BoA. Obviously wealthier programs can afford more props. How much of a factor is this REALLY? I've noticed some pretty good bands in Austin don't have props at all this year (Austin High, LASA) and it doesn't seem like they plan to add them. Those schools don't have the biggest budgets or anything, but they can probably swing some props. Don't get me wrong, their shows are entertaining...I just wonder if that is a tactical thing. Is there a move away from over the top props? 5. I've gathered that bands pay consultants or whatever to put together drills and music for them. Do all schools do this? How much does it typically cost? Are there any bands that are great and known for doing this "in house"? Anyway, I hope I am not offending anyone - I just want to understand the marching band world!

  30. In 4A, I think North Lamar and Canton will be in the top 2 with Canton narrowly winning the title. I also predict we will see a couple bands who have advanced to finals before, make it in, and a band or 2 will make it for the first time.... I'm looking at you Lumberton! Whatever the outcome is, this 4A State contest will be different and will have more "Finals Worthy" bands from top to bottom. In 2A, I think Tenaha will continue on being at the top. Now it's hard to predict these smaller conferences however Sundown and Shiner usually do well so I think they will be in finals. It's a tossup for most 2A bands on how good they will do at State as most have a drastic rise or fall every year. For Example: Forsan got 4th in 2018, 2nd in 2020, and then 10th in 2021. in 6A, I predict Hebron to win yet again, although after watching Vandegrift's show preview, I think they could swipe it away from Hebron. I think most bands who competed at State in 2021 will make it again with a few exceptions, as I would like to see North Shore and LD. Bell come back to State. I think we could expect Seven Lakes to make a push for 6A State Finals as well as Timber Creek and Pearland.
