Rudedog34
Since my definition would require a deeper look.... Houston 11 - Stephen F Austin - DNP 12 - Pearland - 25 13 - College Park - 23 14 - Obra D Tompkins - DNP 15 - Clear Brook - 29 16 - Westfield - DNP 17 - William B Travis - DNP 18 - Katy - DNP 19 - Del Rio - 46 20 - Cinco Ranch - DNP DFW 11 - Coppell - 18 12 - Keller Central - 30 13 - James Martin - 38 14 - Trinity - DNP 15 - Aledo - 48 16 - McKinney Boyd - DNP 17 - Duncanville - DNP 18 - Byron Nelson - DNP 19 - Forney - DNP 20 - Wylie - 44 Austin 11 - Pflugerville - 39 12 - Carroll - DNP 13 - Westwood - 33 14 - Rouse - 27 15 - Lake Travis - 28 16 - Weiss - 35 17 - Sandra Day O'Connor - 58 18 - New Braunfels - 49 19 - John Paul Stevens - DNP 20 - Wagner - 53 I still don't see this as defining how competitive a contest is, but it is a measure of the yearly quality of the programs attending. I took a quick look at the 20-30+ finishers. The final 3 finishers (21 - 23) from Austin attended, and finished 79, 80, and 84 respectively. Houston had 4 attend, finishing 36, 37, 64, and 69. I didn't see any from DFW, but I may have missed them. Anyway, it is interesting to see where the attendees ended up by the end of the season. Some made big gains and really improved from the early season regionals, Good stuff by all!
Rudedog34
Should keep in mind that Austin is one of the earliest if not the first competitions of the season and I'd estimate 95% of the bands barely put 1/2 their show on the field. The shows that consistently place in finals are rewarded for their consistant preparation that early in the season. It's a waist of time to compare contests of varying times throughout the season. SASR is the final test for all but those who can afford the trip to GNs. josephbandfan and gregorydf01
Danpod
https://marching.musicforall.org/event/houston19/ Houston Regional List as of May 15th! Please note that the cap at participants for a regular Regional is 32. Houston has 41 signed up so it'll be interesting to see how this develops. gmtb617
What an awesome lineup! Even though the lineup is going to thin down, it’s evident this contest will differ from Houston contests in years past; this time, local schools are going to take up a larger percentage of the spotlight, as they’ve been getting much more competitive in recent years, and non-local heavy hitters are lighter in quantity this year. Bands fighting for places 6-10 are going to spur a massacre. My groupings (listed alphabetically): 100% Locks: Ronald Reagan TWHS Westlake Comfortable Finalists: Cy-Fair Oak Ridge Seven Lakes Winston Churchill Challengers for the last few spots: Brazoswood Clear Brook College Park Cypress Falls Dawson JET Pearland SFA Westwood Could sneak in with a milestone performance: Cypress Woods Friendswood Langham Creek OD Tompkins Pflugerville WB Travis Interested to see how they do: (would love to see a band in this list pop into finals) Bridgeland Churchill Fulshear Cinco Ranch Katy Lumberton Paetow Richland Sandra Day O’Connor Westfield I’m fairly certain I put 75% of all bands on the list in one of these groupings. History can be made at this regional, whether it could be a new medalist, or new faces in finals. I didn’t see performances from all the bands I listed, so I may neglect the potential of some schools; just understand I group these schools because it’s fun to speculate. So much talent from so many bands here (regardless of whether I listed them or not). Cannot wait to see what goes down here!

Guest
I was thinking this exact thing the other day. This event and skill tier has completely shifted in the last four years. In 2014 I remember the entire contest outside of the top 2 was completely up for grabs. Nowadays there are like 20+ potential finalists.
principalagent
The Houston regional used to be the most competitive regional. Then DFW took a big leap up between 2004-2008, and the Austin regional opened in 2013. Then it took a nose dive for a bit, but had some particularly strong years in 2007, 2010, and 2013. bruhmomentum
WOW, its fantastic seeing how much these Houston schools have risen in my past 3 years of marching. This is going to be a bloodbath for sure. Pearland, Seven Lakes, Austin, and Cy-Fair might be reaching San Antonio finalist levels of performance soon. bruhmomentum
I think Cy-Fair reached it this past season. It's really hard to tell how they would've performed at San Antonio based off of last season's results. While they did place highly at Houston last year, bands shift around frequently, and without them attending a later BOA competition, it's quite difficult to pinpoint. Guest
Interesting. Also interesting to note that Cedar Park and Bowie did much better earlier in the season but were passed by at the end. I’m curious to see what 2019 brings for those two bands. Cedar Park was all over the place in 2019, from barely making finals at Austin, to comfortable being in the top 5 at DFW, to unfortunately missing finals at SA. Hopefully 2019 is a strong comeback year!

Guest
Stephen F Austin is coming back again this year any thoughts after a successful year of sweeping the AAA class So from what I hear, they will be marching their largest band since their last GN finalist appearance (2010) and because they will be going to BOA St. Louis, are attempting their most BOA friendly show since around the same time. I think a finals appearance is definetely possible, if they continue the trajectory they are on, as they were likely one of the most improved bands between the last 2 seasons. However, they are not a lock.
