  1. when i saw it, it just confused me. great show, but i'm still wondering if the girl died? was this whole show about going to heaven? idk. does anyone know the meanings behind the three bell shows (the ascension, the remaining, and transcendence) for sure?
  2. i think to win both nationals and texas state would be a pretty big feat. with the exception of 2006 state, uil and boa usually look for some very different things. in '06 bell pulled off second in state and second at nationals. with the way marcus is going, i wouldn't think it impossible. i am fairly certain that some indiana bands have won indiana state and nationals in the same year, however, i am not familiar with the ISSMA system of things.
  3. I also was not ecstatic about Reagan's show. Some could attribute this to Mark Chambers leaving, however since I am not in that band, I can't say anything for certain. And as for the visuals and such, I do think that people were expecting some great GE performance out of them, such as in Beyond Perimeters, Synergy, and, as much as I wasn't a fan of the show, You Never Know. Even last year with Transitions, it was fairly obvious that they witheld on the effects side of the show.
  4. Well, if you think back to Westlake, in prelims Cedar Park swept all captions (except Percussion to Round Rock) and then placed third in finals. Anything can happen. And there was some questioning about the captions in finals. Well, I think its safe to say that Music was expected to go to Marcus (Marcus- 19.45, Bell- 19.00). Visual, on the other hand, which Bell won in prelims, was somewhat surprising (Marcus- 19.05, Bell- 18.90). If you look at the individual judges' scores, Bell received 18.90 from both visual judges while Marcus received 19.50 from the individual marching judge and 18.60 from the ensemble marching judge. Then in GE, musically and visually it was very close (Marcus- 57.70, Bell- 56.90). All these little tenths that Marcus had over Bell is what added up to the 1.4 point difference. I personally feel that both of these bands were superior and both of them deserved first place. P.S. I can't wait to see what Bell pulls out for Grand Nats, and as I said to some of the Marcus parents that were sitting next to me in finals, its a shame Marcus won't be there to represent Texas, however I wish them luck at Midwest!
  5. i would love to see the good 'ol madi scouts back in the top twelve!
  6. I've had the opportunity to witness Jerry Junkin conduct before and I completely agree with you. A few years ago, he conducted the Region (18?) Wind Ensemble through Carmina Burana and did it without a score. Plus, he was crazy into this music (but who can blame him, its effing Carmina Burana). But about Whitacre, I played October my sophomore year in high school and I was fortunate enought to play the euphonium solo. This was the first time that I had heard Whitacre before and I just fell in love with his work. All the greats like Noisy Wheels of Joy, Sleep, Lux Aurumque, October, Water Night, Cloudburst, and the list goes on and on. I do agree with some of the other posts on here in that he is not quite considered one of the "Greatest Composers" yet. But, if he continues cranking out more of these amazing pieces, he certainly has a shot at being up there in the big leagues.
  7. i hate vocals. but that is a great suggestion. I'll definitely do that the next time I watch their show!
  8. I'll start out by saying that this is the other half of TX Suh-Nare's thread, "Who was underrated?" Feel free to speak your mind about who you think was over-rated this past season. My front runner in the game of over-rated shows was The Cadets. I will give them that their horns can play. But all season, all I could hear about was The Cadets' amazing show that everyone has to see. When my friends and I finally got a chance to see it in SA, I was sadly disappointed and somewhat confused. I did not like the music they chose, I absolutely despised the design of the show ("This I believe..."), I didn't think the guard was as strong as they have been in the past, and everything else was just okay for me.
  9. many could argue the same about PR this season. I am a huge fan of PR. And as much as I hated The Cadets' show this season, I feel that overall it was a better package than Phantom's. The way I see it, Cavies, PR, and Cadets were all excellent in certain aspects (Cavies=visual, PR=brass/music, Cadets= idk) so it all came down to whoever could make up for their faults better than the other corps.
  10. this is how i introduce myself to new people: Hi, my name is Kennie. I am a band nerd and I'm proud of it! No joke...
  11. oops, you're right. for some reason i thought that was the show they were asking for! duh... but i have '04 as well
  12. i have an mp3 of their san antonio performance. everything is good about it until they get to the synth part and they had some feedback problems. but the recording is good.
  13. there are so many great shows from over the years it is difficult to namd just a few. here are my favs though (in no particular order): Cadets 2000: I'm a big fan of the whole concept of the show and loved the music from Disney's Millenium Celebration. Star of Indiana '91 and '93: Both were AMAZING shows that were way ahead of their competitors in terms of show design and concept. Crown 2007: Although it wasn't the cleanest, best, highest scoring show, it was definitely a fan favorite (and for good reason!). SCV 2004: The Scheherezade(sp?) was a great show and great music. All around crowd pleaser. Cavies 2002: Frameworks! Need I say anything? SCV '89: Andrew Lloyd Webber must be happy with this representation of 'Phantom' beacuse that is an amazing show that I play on iTunes over and over again. Phantom '89, '96, '06: All my favorite Phantom shows. Huge fan of the Regiment! Like I said, there are soooo many that I could just keep going but I'll stop there for now.
  14. in my band program, and also in my personal beliefs, it is more important to have a challenging program both musically and visually than to have a pristine-clean show. of course, having both would be the best bet, but we don't live in a perfect world, do we?
  15. Okay, so one of the Carolina Crown brass instructors asked me to make it publically known that there is now an audition date (December 10) for the corps in Texas. It is going to be held at Hendrickson High School and all are welcome to audition. I will be there (partially due to a unofficial contract that I signed). Crown has one of the best brasslines in the country so it would be a fun and wise investment for all you brass players (sorry woodwinds!). -Wilson07
