Bluecoats show is titled Metropolis and will definately be playing Asphult Cocktail.

Blue Stars 2010 Program will be titled Houdini. Program will be half Phillip Glass, half Original Music.

Cadets haven't released certain pieces but they might be using music from this list of composers.
Samuel Barber
Jay Bocook
Howard Hanson
Nicholai Rimsky-Korsakov

Colts-True Colors

Cascades Show will be titled Silver Lining.

Crossmens Show will be entitled Full Circle, using Metheny's pieces Heat of the Day and Full Circle.

Glassmen Announced Last Night on Facebook that they have released some of their program. It will be titled The Prayer Cycle and will be using the music of Jonathan Elias, Philip Glass and Ron Nelson. Sounds like it could be a good year for the Glassmen. GLASSmen, Phillip GLASS. Punny? Anyway here is the article on the site.
http://www.glassmen.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1367:glassmen-2010-program&catid=100:main-page-features&Itemid=27

The corps will present "BARTÓK" and will perform selections from twentieth century Hungarian composer Béla Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra" and "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta"

Sounds like it DCI 2010 Shows - TxBands.com Forumsis turning into another great year to come!

Cadets did mention Merry Mount Suite as the possible Hanson tune.. There is some speculation about a children's show of some sort and Barber's piece being the School for Scandal, but that's all rumor right now

also a rumor, but a some-what reliable source said

"Procession of the Nobles, School for Scandal, Merry Mount Suite - in that order. The theme will be along the lines of "Toy Soldiers."

also, for blue stars

"2010 Blue Stars show titled "Houdini" will be compromised of half original works and the other half, works by Phillip Glass"

sounds pretty cool tongue.gif

Crossmen:

QUOTE
Returning to roots of the past, the Crossmen will perform the music of Pat Metheny in the 2010 Tour Production “FULL CIRCLE”. The repertoire will include some of the standards of Metheny including “Heat of the Day” and “First Circle”.

“The design team has been working hard these past weeks to nail down many of the concepts and direction of the show”, said Corps Director Mark Chambers. “The meetings have been energized and the team is very excited about the possiblities as this show develops”

Stay tuned as more details will follow in the coming days……..

A friend of mine who's "camping" Carolina Crown mentioned that their show would be themed "Second Chances" (or a similarly named title) based off their 2nd place finish last year.....the show will feature Second Symphonies of various major composers.

Sounds kind of "Rumor-y" to me, but it would be an interesting approach.

sounds rumory yes...but also sounds like something Crown would definitely do. And I would love to see them do Barber and Mahlers 2nd. Or Bruckner.....or brahms....the list goes on smile.gif

Just saw the show title on DCP so we can safely assume that's their working title. Oh, and I heard from a very reliable source they are in fact doing Mahler's 2nd happy.gif .

It's kind of surprising how seldom corps program Mahler's music (in comparison to say, another 20th century composer like Barber or Shostakovich), considering how how popular his music is in the orchestral realm (not to mention how German/Wagnerian/bombastic the brass parts tend to be in practice).

It seems like Mahler is somewhat of an untouchable composer in Drum Corps. Hopefully, Crown will bust out a 100-soprano feature!

I would say that Mahler is a 19th century composer, despite the fact that his music didn't really come to prominence until the middle part of the 20th century. He had a few major works stretch into the very early part of the 1900s, but most of his pieces are still anchored pretty heavily in the Romantic period. He definitely prophesies the trend to move away from strict major/minor tonality, but he never ventures into the Neo-classical, Modern, or Atonal areas of composition.

I'm certainly no expert on past DCI shows, but I personally recall far fewer corps featuring Romantic period music versus 20th century works. There are definitely standouts, but that period of music just takes a lot more effort to work into a contemporary marching show.

I kind of agree with you. Good show, played very well. But didn't like the arrangement of Mahler 2 in there.

And yes, i realize the irony of me saying that.

QUOTE
Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the corps' founding, the Jersey Surf takes a decidedly patriotic twist with its 2010 repertoire, entitled "Living the Dream."

Building upon works by American composers Charles Ives, Samuel Ward (by way of Ray Charles), and Dudley Buck, this year's program is designed to celebrate America with the unmistakable sights and sounds of modern-day drum corps brass, percussion and color guard in all of its red, white and blue glory... set on a mythical Main Street smack-dab in the middle of "Anytown, USA."

Patriotic themes are presented in both traditional and playfully unique interpretations, as the corps explores a variety of musical styles. Familiar symphonic musical literature makes room for musical influences of salsa, blues and gospel variations while corps members "Live the Dream" of being a part of the 2010 Drum Corps International Tour.

What if you had the ability to take another shot at a decision, opportunity, or moment? How might choosing a different direction lead to alternate opportunities? Performing musical selections inspired by these possibilities, the corps’ repertoire includes the Second Symphonies of Mahler and Khatchaturian, Danzon No.2 by Marquez; as well as Elgar’s Nimrod, a classically reflective piece that hints at the Second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. Conceptual motifs, a richly coordinated palette, and a touch of nostalgic detail will further illustrate this romantic, yet existential, theme. Carolina Crown 2010 proudly presents: “A Second Chance.”

Repertoire:
“A Second Chance”
Symphony No.2
by Gustav Mahler
Symphony No.2
by Aram Khatchaturian
Danzon No.2
Arturo Marquez
Nimrod ‘from Enigma Variations’
by Edward Elgar
Symphony No.2
by Gustav Mahler

The Blue Devils: "Through a Glass Darkly"

QUOTE
The influence of Stan Kenton has not been foreign to the Blue Devils. Two separate worlds that in a peculiar dance of coincidence continue to leave an imprint on audiences worldwide. According to Ted Gioia in his book The History of Jazz, "The strong willed Kenton, forged an orchestra in his own image: as massive as his six-foot-and-a-half tall frame, as expansive as his personal aspirations, as varied as his moods." He continues later to describe his ambition as "a need to create important music, jazz music on a larger scale than anyone had envisioned before".

Kenton's orchestra was much more than a rich presentation of star soloist; he also advocated the works of new composers and embraced any opportunity to explore artistic contrast. The Kenton orchestra first performed Bob Graettinger's music in 1948. Although he was called a complete original where the past sprang forth within the present to create the future, Bob Graettinger's work mirrored his self-description of "living above the timberline". The work of Graettinger and Kenton, especially The City of Glass, so challenged convention that it was vastly under-valued. Fortunately, the benefit of time can often bring a new understanding and appreciation of what was once so misaligned.

Ultimately, it is the sensibility of the entire "City of Glass" album that informs the 2010 Blue Devils Production of "Through A Glass, Darkly". Performing in an ever-changing city of glass and mirror, the Blue Devils continue to explore and discover visual possibilities outside the norm. Through reflected light and the prism of color the future unfolds. The Blue Devils honor Graettinger and Kenton's innovation with a reflection of the past that defines our present and heralds the future.

"For now we see ...... through a glass, darkly"

Musical Selections Include:

City of Glass Suite - Bob Graettinger
Conflict - Pete Rugolo
Mirage - Pete Rugolo
Trajectories - Franklyn Marks
Incident In Jazz - Bob Graettinger
Laura - David Raksin
La Suerte De Los Tontos - Johnny Richards
