It's that time of the year again. The culmination of the season for many great bands throughout the state of Texas. This year, the 1A, 2A, and 4A classifications meet up at the Alamodome in San Antonio to give it their all in one last competition. I will be running the TxBLive Blog during the prelims of these competitions both today and tomorrow as well as bringing you results throughout the day.

Check it out at: http://live.txbands.com

Hmm, didn't know Somerville was a 1A now. They made State as 2A a few years back, guess it would make sense they'd be 1A finalists.

1A looks to be wide open. Forsan didn't receive a single first place ranking, yet still comes out on top after Prelims. 2A looks to be locked up. Tough break for White Oak and Union Grove. Both were one point away from making Finals.

Yeah, the military bands that think that UIL doesn't reward the military style are being proven wrong. 1A has two great military band in Finals, 2A had 2 great military bands tied only one spot out of Finals, 3A last year had New Boston in Finals, and 5A Finals in 1998 (the last time a 5A military band went to State) Kingwood very nearly made Finals.

UIL is all about doing what you do well without any preconceived notions about what kind of things you are supposed to be doing. Military, Show, or Corps; doesn't matter so long as you do what you do.

Edit: Also, thanks to East Texas and Area C for bringing all these military bands down here to San Antonio!

Interesting that you brought that up. When was the last time a "Show" band has made it to the state level?

Maybe if we imported a show band from Georgia.

Could somebody clarify the differences between show, drum corps, and military style?
All of the great and big bands like LD Bell, Marcus, Coppell, Cedar Park, Duncanville, etc are all corps style right?

Show = Grambling
For Military look up Kingwood 1998 or any Texas A&M show.
And yes, the majority of what we know of in the band world is Corps style.

no offense, but military bands just aren't as interesting to watch as corps style :/
though don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're great at what they do!

Absolutely not, but even a 2 would have still had them one point behind Dripping Springs. It is the marching scores that made the difference, not the music scores.

no offense, but military bands just aren't as interesting to watch as corps style :/
though don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're great at what they do!

You will always be ale to count on Poteet for the military style marching to be around. I don't see them changing what they do. It may not be a "showy" as BOA style, but I find that style full of so much more energy and drive. BOA almost puts me to sleep, but I do appreciate the work of all high school bands.

???????

Poteet is not Military style, they are Corps style.

Kingwood is Military: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U1DERCcx4M
Texas A&M is Military: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4ZbbQcM_RI

BTW, I am blessed to have seen that 1998 Kingwood performance live at State my senior year. The first time I had seen an extremely good military band. The move that stuck out in my head the most was the double chevron that starts around 5 minutes in.

It was announced at the football game Friday that starting next year Cedar Park will move to 4-A. If that's the case two years from now should be interesting with Cedar Park and a full power Vandergrift going head to head with everyone.

Vandergrift, not Vandergriff.

And Vista Ridge should be moving down to 4A next year too.

There is pretty much nothing military about Poteet. They're about as classic drum corps-style as you can get.

And lord help us all if Cedar Park is really moving down. They'll probably be as unbeatable as Richland was in '03.

Oh yeah, and Richland is likely moving down to 4A as well. 4A State will be an absolute bloodbath in 2 years.

LMAO wow. Let's just move all the old 4A powerhouses back down while we're at it. Coppell, Keller, Hebron, Dickinson, Colleville Heritage, Connally, Georgetown, Grapevine, Leander, Fossil Ridge, Wylie, Lopez, New Braunfels, Belton, Allen (though that would be beyond impossible.) That would be epic.
