An article from today's Houston Chronicle:

UIL realignment has some surprises in Houston
By SAM KHAN JR.
Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

The dust has settled and the changes became official on Friday morning as the University Interscholastic League released its football and basketball alignments for 2008-2010 and there were definitely a few surprises for the Houston area.

Teams that dropped from Class 5A to 4A are Stratford (24-4A), Houston ISD’s Lee and Westbury (21-4A) and Magnolia (18-4A). Huffman (22-3A) is the only area school to drop from 4A to 3A.

Teams that moved up in classification from 4A to 5A are New Caney (14-5A), Seven Lakes (17-5A) and Dickinson (24-5A).

The enrollment cutoffs are as follows: Class 5A: 2,085 and above; 4A: 980-2,084; 3A: 430 to 979; 2A: 200-429; 1A: 199 and below.

New 5A schools that have been added are DeKaney (Spring ISD, 13-5A); Travis (23-5A), which was already competing in varsity in non-football sports, and Clear Springs (24-5A).

New 4A schools are Magnolia West (18-4A), Kingwood Park (19-4A), Goose Creek Memorial (19-4A), Manvel (24-4A) and Dawson (24-4A). Kingwood Park and Manvel area already competing at the varsity level in non-football sports.

Strake Jesuit found itself in a new 18-5A with Alief ISD (Elsik, Hastings, Alief Taylor) and Spring Branch ISD (Memorial, Northbrook, Spring Woods).

In Class 5A, the Houston-area picked up an 11th district, which will compete in Region II. District 13-5A (Klein ISD, Spring ISD and Tomball), 14-5A (Conroe ISD, Lufkin, New Caney) and 15-5A (Cypress Fairbanks ISD) are the three Region II districts.

Region III begins with 17-5A, where Katy ISD and Alief ISD are no longer together in a district. District 17-5A is now reconstructed with only Katy ISD schools - Seven Lakes made the move up to 5A and will join Katy, Cinco Ranch, Mayde Creek, Morton Ranch and Katy Taylor.

Alief ISD will compete in 18-5A with Spring Branch ISD, with the exception of Stratford, who dropped to Class 4A and will compete in District 24.

District 19-5A consists of Aldine ISD and Humble ISD schools (except Kingwood Park which will play in 19-4A). District 20-5A remains all Houston ISD, with Westbury and Lee dropping to Class 4A.

District 21-5A consists of Baytown Lee, Baytown Sterling, Beaumont West Brook, Channelview, North Shore and Port Arthur Memorial. District 22-5A is Pasadena ISD, La Porte, Deer Park and Pearland.

District 23-5A is the only 5A area district that is unchanged - it will remain with only Fort Bend ISD schools. District 24-5A remains largely the same, losing Pearland but adding Dickinson and Clear Springs.

In Class 4A, the Houston area retains Districts 18-24. District 18-4A saw the addition of Magnolia and Magnolia West and losing Livingston. District 19-4A saw the most change: Barbers Hill, C.E. King, Crosby, Galena Park, Forest Brook and Smiley, who are currently in 21-4A, are now joined by Dayton, Goose Creek Memorial and Kingwood Park in the new 19-4A.

District 20-4A kept all its Golden Triangle-area schools (Beaumont Central, Beaumont Ozen, Lumberton, Nederland, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Port Neches-Groves, Vidor) and adds Livingston to the mix.

District 21-4A and 22-4A are Houston ISD districts. In 21-4A, Austin, Davis, Lee, Reagan, Sharpstown, Waltrip, Westbury and Yates will compete while 22-4A will consist of Furr, Jones, Kashmere, Scarborough, Sterling, Washington, Wheatley and Worthing.

District 23-4A is now what used to be 24-4A, with one change. Bay City, El Campo, Foster, Lamar Consolidated and Terry are now joined by Stratford.

District 24-4A the old 23-4A (Angleton, Brazosport, Friendswood, La Marque, Santa Fe, Texas City) plus Manvel and Dawson, the new Pearland ISD school.

In 3A, 21-3A keeps its Golden Triangle schools (Bridge City, Hamshire-Fannett, Orangefield, Silsbee, Hardin-Jefferson, West Orange-Stark). In 22-3A, Cleveland, Tarkington, Coldspring, Liberty, Shepherd and Splendora are now joined by Huffman.

The other Houston-area 3A district, 26-3A, now consists of Brookshire Royal, Needville, Stafford, Sweeny, Columbia and Wharton.

In 2A, 23-2A looks like the old 24-2A with Anahuac, Buna, Deweyville, Hardin, Kountze, Warren and East Chambers, while 24-2A now consists of Houston Can Academy, Jackson Academy, Milburn Academy, Yes College Prep North Central and Yes College Prep Southeast.

Around the state there were several changes. New schools in Class 5A include La Joya Palmview, San Antonio Brandels and San Antonio Johnson. Non-area schools that moved up from 4A to 5A are Cedar Park Vista Ridge, Copperas Cove, Keller Fossil Ridge, McKinney Boyd, New Braunfels, Pflugerville Connally and South San Antonio. Schools that are 4A size that decided to opt up to 5A are Dallas Molina, Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass Winn, Fort Bend Marshall, Willowridge and Laredo Martin.

Non-area schools that dropped from 5A to 4A are Abilene Cooper, Carrollton Smith, Carrollton Turner, Corpus Christ Ray, Dallas Adams, Dallas Carter, Granbury, Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo Johnson, Laredo Nixon, Longview, Mansfield Legacy, Mansfield Timberview, Rockwall, San Marcos and Seguin.

Schools that moved up from 3A to 4A are Canyon, Castroville Medina Valley, Frisco Liberty, Frisco Wakeland, Hutto, Mabank, Pleasanton and Royse City. Schools elevated by request are Austin Johnston, Austin Reagan, Forest Brook, Furr, Jones, Kashmere, Scarborough, Washington and Worthing.

In all, there are 245 5A schools, 243 in 4A, 180 in 3A, 225 in 2A. In Class 1A, there are 380 basketball schools, 163 11-man football schools and 129 six-man football schools.

Whoa, us moving down hit us like a brick wall. I was in Algebra 2 when we found out and there are a lot of band kids who are sophomores and juniors in that class and they were pissed especially the juniors who were looking forward to going to state next year...sad.gif

Today was a sad day at Smith for the underclassmen in band. Me being a senior, it doesn't affect me, but the underclassmen were extremely put out that they won't have another chance to make state in marching. But, oh well, that's just the way the cookie crumbles I guess lol

With the addition of these programs, it is highly likely that Area D will send six bands to State. Yikes!

I find it funny that North Shore is JUST NOW being put in the same football district as Channelview....NSHS is only 10 minutes from CHS, and yet my school (CV) was playing Beaumont (1.5 hour drive) when I was there last year, Channelview's first year as a 5A high school.

I HAVE to go to the NS vs. Channelview football game next year. That will be very very interesting, to say the least.

I'm also surprised that Dickinson got moved up to 5A. I wasn't expecting that any time soon. Eh, at least they get two state years in a row

Realignment took place and we were bumped down to 4A.

2001: Only year to compete for State.
2002: We were 4A and it was 5A State year.

It stunk.

going 5A is having a mixed reaction at connally, we are excited in the fact that we will get to compete with the big boys of the sate, and hopefully make a great name for ourselves in the 5A realm, but we are scared in our chances to meae state again, and making it into the All-State band.
I am sad that my road to make all-state has now become alot harder, but I am really really looking forward to competiting at Area D as a 5A next year smile.gif

It's going to be interesting to see how the regions change up around D/FW. It probably won't much, but I remember two years ago when UIL created two new regions out of Region 5.

I'm just kinda depressed that we aren't going to be the #1/#2 band in our district anymore, now that Richland and Haltom are in it.

Well it's not all that bad for the Juniors because their freshmen year we were 4A and it was 4A State year and a realignment year and we were moved up to 5A for their sophomore year and it was a 5A State year....So they at least got to twice but I am pretty sure they wanted that third one badly...Your school reminds of ours, it fluctuates between 4A and 5A its like 4.5A lol....You just have the play the hand that is dealt to ya and make the best of it... happy.gif

This makes Area B for 4A even harder now.

You're still Area B right?

And Timberview is area B...

So that makes the front runners for 4A state from Area B:

Sherman
The Colony
Aledo
Centennial
Southwest

AND NOW:
Newman Smith
Mansfield Timberview

PLUS:
Wakeland

The freshmen, sophomores, and seniors (well duh they are graduating) and band directors (well the only one there after school seemed to have seen it coming and prepared himself for the worst) are taking it well a lot of the juniors are pissed 'cause it affects them the most...Our school is always fluctuating so I kind of expected it but I was hoping we would stay up...I wonder how many students we were off from being 5A...

LBJ = Lyndon Baines Johnson if it's from Austin.

Lyndon Baines was a complicated man....

So, why do state years alternate? I honestly just though about it, and I have no idea... It almost seems unfair. Especially with these kinds of situations.

Me and a friend had this same discussion, like in the case of mbui, he only got to participate in one state year do to the realignment. It would be nice if they didn't alternate but there probably is a reason for it...

Cue Sanchez....

I'll take a stab at this.

I think UIL/TMEA wants to have equal emphasis on Marching Band and Concert Band. At that same token, they want to prevent burnout as much as possible. Imagine going through a State Contest year just by itself. The road to the State Marching Contest probably emcompasses some of most intense performances in the Nation. You definitely deserve some sort of break after that! Now, tack on the intensity of All-State Auditions, which begin just days after State Contest. Finally, add the intensity and drive needed to prepare music for the State Honor Band. Talk about burnout! We here in Texas take our band seriously, no matter if you're standing up or sitting down. UIL and TMEA just want to keep kids from spontaneously combusting from so much playing.

That is a whole 'nother topic all in and of itself.

I don't like it either, but there are many reasons which include (but are not limited to):

- Travel distance and expenses. Arranging travel for so many kids is really expensive especially considering the fact that you don't even know if you are going to go until a week before the competition. And no matter where you hold the competition, at least on part of the state will be at least 8 hours away.
- Stress of Competition. Many band directors don't like the idea of glorifying competition and especially not spending so much money on it. And there already is a State competition for band every year (Marching alternates with Honor Band) and having two in one year would be very stressful.
- There are more 3A and lower voting schools in the UIL than 4A and above, and the above reasons (and many others) tend to apply more strongly towards the smaller schools.

It really has to do with money more than anything else, I think. The activity is huge and it's more expensive to have all these music programs do all these things year-round than a sports team. My predecessors explained it the best though.

You're still Area B right?

And Timberview is area B...

So that makes the front runners for 4A state from Area B:

Sherman
The Colony
Aledo
Centennial
Southwest

AND NOW:
Newman Smith
Mansfield Timberview

PLUS:
Wakeland

DANG!

i'm pretty sure we are.

Just read in the Star-Telegram that they were considering an appeal but the head football coach and principal decided against it stating that it is better for the football team this way.

Haha, think of the numbers!? ohmy.gif

I don't think we get to play you guys anymore. So long to the Mansfield v. Timberview rivalry game, but I still think we play Summit in a non-district game and of course we play Legacy and you guys play Legacy too in a non-district game.

Wow. Newman Smith missed the cutoff by 1. I don't know if its the actual attendance of that October day or the overall enrollment, but it must be devastating.
