  1. 1. What is your relationship to Texas Marching Bands?

I've been generally curious about this for a while now, because it seems that recently this season the most active posters have been parents first, then alumni, with a few students here and there. I have no problem with that of course, but it didn't always used to be that way, so I'm testing out the poll settings of this forum to see if there's a just a lot of students out there who are lurking, or if this really has become a forum dominated by the older crowd.

Hopefully the poll works...?

Hmmm... I think having to choose one option would be best for getting accurate data. We all could identify as general fans but Im curious how many are just general fans. If you are an alumni and a band parent, you probably follow the activity currently more because you are a parent than because you were in band 20+ years before.

Edit: I like the alumni parent option

I was in Band in High School, College and the US Air Force (Band was not my full time job in the Air Force, just in Basic Training and on the side).  I have two children, one a band alumni and the other still in band in High School.  (Can you figure out my High School from the Profile Pic and even harder, the year?  Hint the uniforms were new that year.)

So would that make me an Alumni, a Parent and a Alumni Parent?

with you - I did 4 years of High School band and DC - Navy Band/drill team - had a 4 year band member and the last 4 as a supporting alumni parent - now have a freshmen member - Alumni, Parent, Alumni Parent, or just a huge fan of Texas Bands?

I tend to agree with lostchoirguy in that for the sake of data I’ll limit it to one option, which should be what you currently most identify as that keeps you posting on these boards.

Hard to say at this point in life, all of it makes me who I am and are good reasons why I enjoy Bands and Texas Bands.   Hard to put people in a single category, maybe that's something the current culture can think about...   However for the sake of the thread I voted Parent.

i went with Alumni parent - that is my current station in life and will be for some time to come

As expected – ya’ll (we) are old!! Some misc. thoughts-

1. While the percentage of current students who responded is expectedly small, I bet there is a larger chunk of lurking students who can’t respond (I think you have to have an account to respond to the poll). I’ve read in the past that some directors really don’t want their students posting on boards, which is probably fair based on some things that have been posted by some…less than mature…student posters in the past.

2. I love seeing how many alumni parents are on this board. It means a lot that an extra-curricular done by your kid is still part of your lives years later (and honestly, ya’ll make some of the best posts). That’s pretty awesome to me.

3. I would love to hear the stories of those who are “general fans.” This category definitely received more votes than I expected.

4. Also enjoyed seeing some names that I thought were one category, where i was completely wrong.

Thanks for voting!

I went to Keller High School but I never marched and my brother currently goes to Keller. Wasn’t sure if you only wanted alumni that marched and I’m not exactly a parent so I went with general fan.

My 2 brothers and I took piano lessons when we were younger but eventually stopped. You know

kids, sometimes games sounded more appealing than practice  .  My father and older brother still play piano and guitar. Now I greatly regret not continuing but not for anything professional. Just for myself really because music is a beautiful thing.

I went to a private school until 7th grade and our school did not really have a band program. I want to say maybe around 15 people in total were in band which was taught by a band teacher at Nolan Catholic High School. When I moved to Keller in 8th grade, I was just never exposed to band. My younger brother joined band in intermediate and that was when I started going to the middle and high school concerts. My older brother's friend was in band but quit because apparently it was heck lol. I wasn't planning on joining band or anything but that did the opposite of offering any kind of persuasion. I went to the KISD Marching expo every year because marching shows interested me and would occasionally watch videos. My friends in band would talk to me about music and props in their show. I was in National Art Honor Society and we had to get art related volunteer hours so I remember I spent a day helping to paint the clouds in their Ascend show. This one friend was completely geeking out over Leonardo's Dream and because I had very limited experience watching marching band at the time, I was like, "Oh that’s cool.. but I still think Ascend is better." I eventually learned more though and by the end of the season, Keller even getting 5th at SMBC was very exciting.

Now I am currently in college and my younger brother goes to Keller. With college classes being split up by semesters, I feel like I've been out of high school for so long now when it has only been a few years. The marching activity has invaded my life. I listen and watch everyday. Actually,  I am currently listening to North Shore 2016 at the moment. I feel like I have learned so much over the years, especially from these forums. I'll talk to my brother and friends from other schools and will be surprised at how much more I know about the other programs in the nation as well as things like judging and rules. My brother is my main source of info regarding what goes on at Keller and I am his source when it comes to everything else.

If I could go back, I would join band and probably do color guard in the winter. But all of that along with art being my focus sounds like a lot. In general, I have a huge appreciation for all art forms. I love to read, play games, analyze films, I dabble in photography, graphic design, watch ballet and breakdancing. I love to paint, sculpt, draw, I took a kiln glass class 2 semesters ago so FloMo's Vitrify instantly intrigued me. As of recently, I have fallen in love with musical theatre!

Okay enough of me, I think I overshared a bit ^_^ . Hopefully that paints a picture.

My situation is very similar. I went to Keller and I was not in band, but my sister was in band (04-06) and it got me interested in what they were doing (though I was pretty young at the time). In high school, I was very involved in choir, but I had a lot of good friends in band. I took AP music theory as a Junior and about 30 of the 40 students were band students in the top ensembles. My senior year, 2 of my close friends and another decent acquaintance were the drum majors.

I guess I just continued to follow marching band because I thought it was amazing what the students were producing and I was excited to see Keller grow to become a power in the state. Over the last few years it has become a bit of an obsession! So I guess that makes me a general fan, right?

I remember when I first joined and you said that we were in a similar boat. That helped to ease me into this community.
