Friendswood Marching Contest 2019

Recommended Posts

Friendswood always seems to attract some of the best bands Houston has to offer! I’ll try ranking top 10:

1. Oak Ridge (If their sound and visual energy match 2018 early season, they’ll take this contest.)

2. Pearland

3. Clear Brook

4. JET

5. Dawson (never saw this band perform before; may underestimate them)

6. Clements

7. Jersey Village

8. Cypress Ranch

9. Clear Lake

10. Bubble

Bubble: J Frank Dobie, Westfield, Dickinson, Clear Falls

Unfortunately I don’t know enough about the bands I didn’t list to place them in the bubble or not. Anyone going to this contest can make finals, seriously.

Im pretty sure Westfield will be in finals if not top 5. They were an area F finalist last season and are back on the rise.

Yeah I was debating whether to put them in finals or not; I saw them at BOA Conroe 2018 and surprised they didn’t place a little higher. I agree they’re on the rise. Hopefully this season they can gain strong early momentum; reason I didn’t put them in for this contest was mostly due to McAllen 2018. Who knows; they can definitely turn it around!

1: Pearland high school: Very good showings in both 2017 and 2018. I believe performance levels were higher in 2018 than they were in 2017, but they didnt quite recapture the same magic that the 2017 show created. Find a happy medium between both of those showings and I think they will have a very good season.

2: JE Taylor: A very strong band that tends to peak early. I was very impressed by the massive wall of sound they created last year, and have no doubts they will come back even stronger next year. Could potentially be first if they tone down the bit of edge that they tend to have in their sound.

3: Dawson: Two words. Ensemble sound. One of the best playing bands in the Houston area. Could place higher if they had a more ambitious show design, something I haven't seen (IMO) since their wonderful 2016 show. Also a bit hard to predict this band, as they are very sporadic year to year.

4: Oak Ridge: Would have them much higher, but I do believe that Albert Vela is no longer with them, so we may be seeing a bit or a transition/regrouping year from them. Would love to be proved wrong! Nevertheless, expect a very large, lush ensemble sound from this band.

5: Westfield: Okay, so im gonna brag a bit on this band. From around 2013-2016, this band was STRUGGLING. Very low numbers, some questionable show designs, and some very dramatic staff changes, and then in the 17 and 18 seasons, the band exploded in numbers and surged in performance levels. I really enjoyed their ocean themed show last year, and look forward to what we see from them this year. Lookout for a surprise (maybe not too surprising) BOA Houston finals return from this band.

6: Clear Brook: LOVE LOVE LOVED the beautiful Christmas show from last season. Fix those individual errors and this band could shake things up in the Houston area.

7: Willis: Good sounds, good technique, shows could use a bit more demand and impact. Should be a solid finalist at this contest.

I apologize, but beyond these bands, I am not very familiar with anyone here. I cant wait to change that!

I’m so glad you mentioned JET’s wall of sound! Ive noticed this about them and many predictors tend to overlook it. Surprised their musical power and technical acuity (both musical and visual) didn’t propel them to a higher placing at state last year.

While I agree they should have been higher, they do tend to peak early.
