takigan
Random observation; I wonder why 6 Japanese marching bands have been awarded the shield but none have been awarded the flag (concert groups) or the scroll (community groups).Sorry, just using the general nature of the topic to observate. Congrats to TWHS. MadisonBandMan1
TWHSParent
From the official announcement on the TWHS Facebook page. It includes some information that I didn't know about the award, such as can only be given after a director has been with a program for at least 7 years, can only be given once under the same director. We are extremely excited and fortunate to announce that The WoodlandsHigh School Band has been awarded the prestigious Sudler Shield for2018! The Sudler Shield is an International Award recognizing highschool, youth, and international marching bands of world classexcellence. The award is sponsored by Louis and Virginia Sudler and ispresented by its chairman, W. Dale Warren, the Senior Wind BandConductor and Professor of Music in the University of ArkansasDepartment of Music. The purpose of the Sudler Shield is to establish and supportinternational standards of excellence in musical performance, marchingexecution, choreography, and show design for high school, youth, orinternational marching bands. It also aims to identify, recognize, andhonor outstanding high school, youth, and international marching bandswho are at a world class level of excellence. Only one or two large highschools are selected each year from around the country and the worldfor this award. The Sudler Shield is considered to be the highest honora marching band can receive. This is the second time TheWoodlands has been a recipient; the first time in 2009 under thedirection of Brett Johnson. A band program is only eligible for theaward once a director has been presiding over the program for a minimumof seven years. Once a band program is awarded this honor, it cannotreceive the award again under the same director. The requirements,pre-requisites and consistency of excellence from year to year that theSudler Shield demands makes it incredibly rare for a band program to benamed a recipient once, let alone twice! We are so proud of ourdedicated and passionate students, our hard working staff, ourincredibly supportive and willing parents and our campus and districtadministration for making this all possible. The award will bepresented at a special event or concert later this school year by Mr. W.Dale Warren! We will be sure to share information about thepresentation when details have been confirmed. GO WOODLANDS BAND!!! AvonDad and LeanderMomma

kymarching08
Being from KY (also my first post here, so hello everyone!) I think it is a great idea for them to have a small school division which would give a lot of the smaller schools who have great marching bands to get recognized. Adair has always been one of the best marching band programs KY has to offer and it's great to see them get this honor.

Something you'll find here is that the focus is so much on the large school bands. That being said, the overall level of posting here is great! A couple years ago Russell County also received the small school award. Russell and Adair are bordering counties with some rivalry between them. Lafayette (2), Paul Lawrence Dunbar (2), North Hardin, and Harrison County have also been awarded from KY. A total of 8 awards for a relatively small state (I grew up and did marching band there too back in the 20th century). CTJBandPops
