"My band". I unfortunately left the program this year. Still pulling for them though. I'll be at all the contests I can actually get to to cheer them on. Maybe Haltom will be at one or two of those and I can see what all the hype is about

I really don’t mean to be rude here, but read through this thread. Does anyone else think it’s a bit exhausting how much two or three accounts are constantly trying to boost a certain school? There’s very little actual discussion about the Area for the majority of the thread.

Of course, Haltom really improved last year and is hyped to be really good this year. Horn Rank isn’t incorrect with their rankings but they really don’t know much more that the rest of us. These rankings are pretty much pure speculation and competion results will in some cases be drastically different to what they predict.

I can't help but agree. I think they're gonna do great and all, but it's a little weird.

Someone had to say it.  No doubt that Haltom had a fantastic year....but it was one year. 

 

Are they on the rise?  Quite likely. 

 

Are they a powerhouse of consistency like Keller or Bell has been over the last several years?  No

 

Let's see them put up multiple years of similar results and then we'll start talking about being a lock for state.

Definitely going to continue the bandwagon here. Let your band speak for itself. Some hype here and there is good, but it got unbearable in the lead-up to Atlanta last year (even if well earned in the end).

Again I do not go to haltom . My kids graduated in years past . And I’m still involved yes . But again I’m always interested in several other groups but haltom always has a place in my heart

But yes we talk a lot especially me because I see what they are doing and it impresses me and excites me although they may not be known as “powerhouse” groups they are still a group that is worth talking about even if it’s a lot from this one lady in particular

I don't know if you've noticed but they have been "talked about"....a lot.  And by several people on the board including myself.  But to the previous poster's point, there's hype and then there's over doing things...people are talking about Haltom as a growing program and their 2017 was very impressive but their BISD neighbors had two straight years of 1st and 2nd finishes...and they beat Haltom twice in 2016.  There's no talk in here about Richland being a "lock".  I have no idea if that's because they had a lot of upperclassmen the last two years, program changes, they're a "band on the rise" or what but there it is.....

 

I'm really happy that you're hyped about Haltom...I'm excited to see what they bring this year and hope they are about to turn the corner to becoming a powerhouse.  But, again, let's see sustained success before putting them ahead of their Area B bunkmates who are perennial state finalists like Keller and Bell.

Yup. We've barely seen anything from anyone. Almost every post on here is speculation based on last year. But like someone above me said hype is great. Not being excited kills programs where they stand.

Thank you for saying this. I encourage everyone to try to remove your bias. It is usually very obvious if you try to hide your association. Just be open about which band you are associated with and don’t try to overhype it because you will be disappointed if you don’t achieve your expectations. Also, no one should ever let competitive success dictate how they feel about their band program because it is a lot more than that.

I thought my kids' band was the best.  Were they?  No....but they're really, really good!!  Are they going to win State?  No....the goal may be to win State but I suspect this year, if you ask the directors "off the record" just making State would be awesome...anything after that will be gravy. 

 

But it's like I said in an earlier post (maybe on this subject)...you have to set realistic expectations going into a season.  Hebron, Marcus, FloMo, Leander, etc....those bands can set really high expectations.  Then there are bands where simply making finals at State would be an incredible accomplishment....then there are bands were making State would be the accomplishment.

 

It's one of the best things about the "marching community"....it's competitive but we all support every band out there.  I learned this very quickly at my first BOA competition.....the Marcus parents gave a standing ovation to every school.  Marcus....the standard-bearer for state championships.  When I saw that, I knew my kids were in something special.

I agree, it is so nice to be at competitions and have everyone cheer for everyone else.   I also think it's really nice when all of the schools within a district really cheer for other schools in the same, like Marcus, Flower Mound and Hebron all really support each other.   I wish the Plano schools would have that same support for each other!  I know I pretty much stand up for every single band myself, they all deserve it!    

 

I think the thing that is really hard with this Area competition is that some really quality bands are not only going to be left out of state, but also out of finals all together.  I haven't seen any shows yet so I don't know how excited I should be and for which schools!   I am excited to see Haltom's show as I love the music and can't wait to see how it all comes together, but I am equally excited to see PESH's show as I know the music for their show and it is awesome as well and I hope they can put it all together.   Just so many possibilities and so many great bands in this Area...   it will be interesting to see if any of the up and coming bands can knock Keller, Coppell, or LD Bell out...   yet I would be sorry to see any of these great bands not make it to state!   All so deserving.

Remember, it's UIL.  There are always instances where a program will do VERY well in Area Prelims and not be able to advance to State.  Objectively solid performances a program's best change to get to San Antonio in November.
