I think the top four will likely be the same (Vandegrift, Leander, CTJ, Cedar Park - maybe in a different order) with the slight possibility of Round Rock sneaking in there somewhere if they get a good, solid start. I expect Hendrickson and Vista Ridge to do well and not only make the finals again, but maybe move up a spot or two. Bowie will be there and they always have the potential to do very well. Westlake and Cedar Ridge both have real potential and Churchill is Grand Nationals bound and likely to hit the gate running.

1. Austin Vandegrift H.S., TX

2. Leander H.S., TX

3. SA Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S., TX

4. Cedar Park H.S., TX

5. Round Rock H.S., TX

6. Pflugerville Hendrickson H.S., TX

7. Austin James Bowie H.S., TX

8. Cedar Park Vista Ridge H.S., TX

9. SA Winston Churchill H.S., TX

10. Round Rock Cedar Ridge H.S., TX

11. Austin Westlake H.S., TX

12. Round Rock Westwood H.S., TX

13. Dripping Springs H.S., TX

14. Leander Rouse H.S., TX

T 15. Austin Anderson H.S., TX

T 15. Sharyland Pioneer H.S., TX

These are my predictions as of now. Picks 1-4 are interchangeable, same goes for picks 7-10. I hate to leave Westlake out of my finalists picks, but I feel like their shows are mainly UIL material. They could potentially make finals, knocking Cedar Ridge out.

At the moment my favorite show that I know of here is Vandegrift. Not a huge fan of Leander's compared to their shows from the past three years.

I haven't watched the Cedar Park preview yet but once I do I'll decide where to place them.

Guessing Leander and CTJ are going to want redemption from their relatively low placements at Nats, and end up having strong momentum early season. Cedar Park did much better than most predicted and may continue improving drastically (think Flomo from 2014 into 2015, they improved insanely from SA to Nats and then became the monster they were last year and in 2015 and will presumably be to some extent this year as well).

Depending on what CTJ and Round Rock put out there could be an insane competition for first.

The blanks will be filled in/shifted when I see anything from Cedar Park, CTJ, or Round Rock (other attending groups as well, but assuming top 5 stay the same)

1. ?

2. Vandegrift

3. ?

4. Leander

5. ?

If I see anything SUPER impressive from another attending group I'll definitely consider sliding things around, I could definitely see Bowie, Hendrickson and Round Rock fighting for 5th if the formers are as strong/stronger than last year.

It's going to be a crazy competition, that's for sure.

Five of the six bands in the last block are Leander ISD, that's some crazy "random" scheduling  :D

It's very possible we could see all six Leander ISD bands performing at night: if Glenn earns a class AA exhibition, and the other five make finals.

I'll bring you a Starbucks. Will you be sitting with the "other" Daniel?

Seriously though, how did Pioneer HS get such an AWFUL start time? They're coming from the Valley for Pete's sake! But let me tell you I am so excited to see them and I WILL get there early enough to do so. They came out of NOWHERE last year to take 2nd overall at BOA McAllen. They weren't on anyone's radar! Not even expected to make finals, this little 2A band snuck onto the scene and practically stole the show!! SECOND PLACE, PEOPLE!

Yeah, I'm a little excited.

It'll be a great contest all around!  Yes, The Dan Clan (Valdez and Sanchez) will be at the top of the stands ready to bring all the knowledge!

I was also very surprised by them last year. Can't wait to see them in person!

My prediction for top 3 based on what I've seen:

1. Vandegrift

2. CTJ

3. Leander

Music: Vandy/Leander

Visual: Leander/CTJ

GE: CTJ/Vandy

I believe all the captions will go to these three, and each of them is capable of winning two captions. Whoever gets GE wins it but the margins will be slim. Very slim. I think Cedar Park or Round Rock could sneak into medals as well, especially with Round Rock going to Gnats this year.

Round Rock is much more aggressive/dark this year. Excited for this season and what all the bands bring to the field.

With the recent change in BOA's Judging, bands with more advanced visual programs will likely do better than they did last year; It stands to reason then that although the field is very similar to 2016 in this regional, Bands with a majority of musical focus wont do as well as last year here.

My outlook with this in mind...

1-3 Category (No Particular Order)

Leander/Claudia Taylor Johnson/Round Rock

4-6 Category (No Particular Order)

Cedar Park/Vandegrift/James Bowie

7-9 Category (No Particular Order)

Vista Ridge/Winston Churchill/Hendrickson

Bubble Category (No Particular Order)

Cedar Ridge/Westlake/Rouse/Tom Glenn/Stony Point/Dripping Springs/Westwood/Pioneer

Edit: Pioneer added to bubble

I'd definitely have them over Stony Point, but I'd be pretty suprised to see them in finals. They're on their way though.

Yes, poor Stony Point has had a bit of a roller coaster ride this year with band director changes and all.  Everytime I think they might have a shot at having a good year, something happens within their program to cause a whole new set of issues.  But I'm always rooting for them and hoping to see big improvement in coming years...they ARE an RRISD school after all!
