So now that i am completely wrong and absolutely stunned at the intensity of this competition, I can give my opinions on actual results. I do believe that Hebron still should have won Music, as I don’t think anyone was as clean as they were. Visually CTJ had one of the hardest books and I agree with what Rubisco said earlier, I just thought they were a little dirty. Vandegrift was absolutely a shock to me. They’re always pushing for a medal and I’m really glad they got it, they were way past my expectations. Vandy has my favorite show, I of course loved CTJs GE and Hebrons mellos are literally music form of addictive drugs. Incredible. While I disagree with the judging results, I don’t necessarily disagree with placements. I’m also not a professional who is payed to do their job and I definitely do not know what I’m talking about most of the time. There’s probably a lot of things judges on the field saw or heard that was different than what most of us heard. Anyways. Time to go in to my hole for 6 months until marching season comes back #DCI.

For the Houston bands, I am unsurprised by Cy Fair. I thought they should have been a bit higher.

What I am surprised about is how Seven Lakes edged out Friendswood and Clear Brook. Did anyone get to see their performances and if so, what caused Seven Lakes to shoot up this year because prior to this they hadn't placed higher than 34.

Question from a noob: I loved Vandegrift's show, and I think their dance team does a fantastic job. But how can they be judged on the same standard as groups like Avon and Bowie, whose guards spin and toss every kind of equipment like maniacs and with incredible skill? Vandy just does some swing flag, and I don't remember seeing them toss anything.

Carmel coming to Texas in 2002 was humbling, but there’s no doubt that their win was very responsible for the huge changes Texas has made in visual in the 15 years since. Avon bringing their visual to Texas will, I believe, do much of the same. It was an honor to see you, and I can’t wait to fly to Indy and see it again this weekend!

I know that there are a few people from Avon who have been following this thread. I just want to reach out to you and vicariously to the Avon Black and Gold and say what an honor it is that you came and joined us this weekend. Looking at your past BOA results I realized that it has been many years since you have missed out on a medal at any event, and I hope that this doesn't discourage you. Your show is fantastic and I am certain will be right at the top at grand nationals. I hope you enjoyed your time in Texas. I would also like to say thank you for what you have done to improve the nature of marching band in our state. Simply by coming this year, you fostered an environment of competitiveness that has pushed our "bubble bands" to improve in vast measures to keep up. In addition, you have given some of our good bands that aren't quite ready to make the trip or that don't have the funding to go to grand nationals the chance to see a truly phenomenal visual program which is rare to witness here. I hope that the band and all associated parties have safe travels home and I can't wait to see what you accomplish next week!

I agree - I met a number of Avon parents over the past 2 days - hope they enjoyed their stay in Texas and decide to make this a routine trip in their marching season. I stuck around to watch the CTJ encore (had to see it again) - and saw that the Avon band was in the stands to watch and cheer for the band - class act - safe travels

I think they are just so clean and something about them is just so pleasing to the eye. And their music is fantastic. But I do agree about the guard. They're more of a dance team and I don't think I recall seeing them toss anything or use any other equipment other than flags. I will have to go look at the videos to confirm. Can someone remind me about Bell- are they the same? Do they use any other equipment other than flags?

Eh, Broken Arrow has been doing it for years, and they're one of if not the top visual group. The reality is guard amd percussion aren't really judged as deeply under the boa sheets compared to something like dci.

there are a number of bands that have dance teams - I think one of the Austin bands (Hendrickson maybe) is known as a marching band and a dance team - it is in their title. but there are many that use dancers now

It allows them to expand their guard and add a new dimension to the show -

Hendrickson uses a full gaurd, and they have a successful one at that

To the contrary banddad84 - data is not King when dealing with the arts. Regardless who won or their score it's a matter of preference in many cases. CTJ deserved to win last night but comparing these productions on a numerical basis is almost impossible. These finals bands are the best of the best and CTJ did not win prelims. I would hate to be a judge when they are all that good and accomplished.
